The last time Persians attacked the Holy Land, they had the Jewish forces on their side. According to Antiochus, the Sasanian capture of Jerusalem resulted in the death of around 60,000 Byzantine Christians. Nearly 1,400 years later, retaliatory Iranian missiles struck Israel in a conflict where Persians and Jews are on opposing sides and the world’s still predominantly Christian hegemon is on the margins as a helpless bystander.
It is too fluid a situation to comment in detail, but it appears the Iranians wanted to keep the attack within that goldilocks threshold with ample warnings ahead. They had backchannels open with the U.S. They informed Iraq about the flight path and trajectory of their missiles. The choice of weaponry—no one intent on waging war uses subsonic drones that take hours to reach the airspace of the enemy to start an air attack followed by a few ballistic missiles, thereby letting enemy air defenses go fully active—was another signal that Iranian actions were predicated on reestablishing deterrence, and not escalation.
Iran’s official statement was measured, and targeted towards signaling the U.S. that Tehran wants to avoid a full-scale war.
"Conducted on the strength of Article 51 of the UN Charter pertaining to legitimate defense, Iran’s military action was in response to the Zionist regime’s aggression against our diplomatic premises in Damascus. The matter can be deemed concluded. However, should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe. It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the U.S. MUST STAY AWAY!"
An almost Trumpian ending to a cautiously worded statement that attests three points: the conflict in Iran’s eyes is over, Iran will have to respond to further Israeli action, and the U.S. and Iran are not enemies—this is not between us.

Iran wants to kill all Jews. They also want to kill the US. Don’t kid yourself
fwiw they actually unfroze either $16 or $26 billion, $10billion is debatable.
Plus, they also doubled the fuel costs thanks to climastescam while Iran’s natural gas output is up 500% in the last 20yrs.
Our climatescam energy policy enriched Iran and Russia with billions and billions and more billions to pay for this warring.
Precisely
Iran IS our enemy. They pay Hamas to kill all sorts of people
“ Does this make Britain our eternal enemy?”
In South Park, yes.

“U.S. and Iran are not enemies”
Hogwash!
N9, I have always supported Israel doing what it has to do, and us staying out of it.
The Persians are not attacking Israel. The mullahs are doing this.
This message utterly misses the point. What is at stake here is the entire idea of western civilization which is threatened internally as much as externally. Israel is key part of that tradition. Part of the challenge was the global New World Order that tried to expand Western Civilization throughout the world at gunpoint carried forward by neo-cons who had no clue what Western Civilization entails including the social contract between a civilization and its individual citizens. Iran is not any part of the construct of western civilization and our social contract. Israel is.
Lack of clarity on that point is the cause much of our Slouching towards Gomorrah.
This is a case where some mean tweets would probably have prevented the attack.
BS. Iran needs their asses kicked once and for all. Only reason it hasn't been squashed to date seems to be twofold. Oil and World War if the commies favorite in the ME is attacked.
No, we don't want to get in a war with them, but they keep pushing and they need severe pushback.
Israel snuffed some of the asshole Iranians who were involved with Oct 7, and Iran can't have that now, can they? Why else do you think the kabuki theater “attack” upon Israel was a staged operation well known by the principles ahead of time, engineered to be a face saving move instead of an outright honest attack?
Iranian aggression, backed by some large partners, are the cause of instability in the Middle East. It's high time to deal with them, but I doubt it will happen in the next 5 years. We'll see.
Actually, plenty of U.S. and British forces were contributing to Israel's defense last weekend.
Israel is only the first target of the Mad Mullahs, Rome is next, then NYC. A good bit of our defense industry relies on products made in Israel, as we do for many other industries.
Get involved now, save lives or wait until Iran brings its war to the US and we lose many, many lives.
They have ICBMS that can reach the US; meanwhile JoeB cut missile defense by 400 billion.
Although you disparage Neocons, you promote their talking points and buzz words. Clash of civilizations. (Moral) clarity. But you forgot "moral compass."
No, the "entire idea of western civilization" is not at stake here. Our porous borders are a bigger threat.
Or made in China.
Neither is good.
America First means bringing home the manufacture of critical products.
“..the U.S. and Iran are not enemies”
Astounding claptrap that completely undermines any arguments the author of the article might try to make. I guess if someone were completely ignorant of what has been happening the last 45 years they might say something like that.
” Let Israel do what it has to do, we don’t need to get involved. “
Agreed ! Israel made the choice to bomb the embassy, and they should deal with the consequences.
What is happening, unfortunately, is that the attack on Gaza was failing, and has been suspended and actually withdrawn.
Also US efforts to suppress the Houthis and keep the Canal open have also failed.
So Bibi establishes a diversion by bombing the embassy (which I am sure Biden signed off on).
Israel needs to get back to cleaning out Gaza. The USA needs to get the Canal re-opened.
That led to a war that was ended by a treaty. It also ended impressment and seizure by the Royal Navy.
There has been no such settlement of Iran's aggression against our embassy and our diplomatic personnel.
Our open borders are part of the threat to “western civilization” and no I am not adopting the POV of the neocons, which is a filthy and baseless charge, thank you very much. I believe in defending our shared western civilization at gunpoint, as a consequence of which I am not a strict America only isolationist. But I also don’t believe it can be spread at gunpoint and its time we stopped trying to do that, which is one of many neo-con fallacies.
