Top Democrat says Johnson in ‘good position’ to remain Speaker if he stages Ukraine vote
The Hill ^ | April 10, 2024 | Mike Lillis

The head of the House Democratic Caucus suggested Wednesday that Democratic lawmakers stand ready to rescue Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) from a potential GOP coup — if he ushers Ukraine aid through the lower chamber and on to President Biden’s desk.

Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) stopped short of saying he would vote personally to save Johnson from a motion to vacate resolution. But echoing an earlier message from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Aguilar noted a number of Democrats are already on record saying they’d help keep Johnson in power if he stages a vote on the Ukraine package that passed through the Senate in February.

That willingness by Democrats to cross the aisle, Aguilar suggested, should be enough to overcome the number of Republicans who might try to topple Johnson.

“The Speaker needs to put that bill on the floor,” Aguilar said during a press briefing in the Capitol. “You have also heard me say, you have also heard Leader Jeffries say — and he has pointed out that it was an observation, not a declaration — that we feel that if the Speaker does the right thing that he is in a good position.

I’m not a fan of Johnson but the Ukraine deal may be the only card he has left. He needs to tread carefully.

Not at all. What dem would vote to save Johnson. They would all vote for Jeffries. Aguilar is trying to be funny and coax a Ukraine vote. So transparent.

On the other hand, a vote to vacate would effectively shut down the House for a rather long time.

Jeffries will be the next Speaker if we went ahead with a vote to vacate.

The Senate needs to pass HR2 and the President needs to sign it.

Then we'll talk.

This is the rats telling the world they own Johnson. They were not satisfied with humiliating him yesterday by forcing him to publicly stab the base in the back by being the tie breaker on FISA. They want to send him a on walk of shame with the Ukraine/Biden money laundering op.

The Dems using their precious Ukraine graft to pretty much blackmail Johnson. Why am I not surprised?

So, he could only remain as Speaker with Democrat help and Zeepers are totally fine with that.

Only card have left? What you are babbling about? The majority of the base OPPOSES giving anymore money to Ukraine.

If he breaks his promise to get legislation passed on the border before any vote on money to Ukraine, he's finished, not only as Speaker but in the House.

You haven't been paying attention here or to the polls. The base doesn't want to see a penny more spent on Ukraine.

Ukraine vote? Johnson is sticking by his guns and not allowing the votes of the border and the Ukraine to get tangled into a misguided mistake. He already said he would consider the Ukraine discussion when the border was supported and was covered in the way the Constitution said it should be.

“The United States Constitution creates a government of enumerated powers. The Constitution delegates to the United States Congress the power “[t]o establish a uniform Rule of Naturalization, … throughout the United States.” Thus, the Constitution gives Congress the power to determine which foreigners can become citizens, and under what conditions.”

The Biden administration has made a concerted effort through courts and the illegal use of Homeland Security under his supervision to open up the borders without a definitive decision by congress.

So as soon as Biden and the liberals work with and conform to the decisions of Constitution, they can talk Ukraine. But I applaud Johnson for doing exactlyh what he said he would without cowering down like so many of the repiblicans have over the last 40 years.

Jefferies as Speaker would make no real differences. The same amount votes are still needed to pass legislation and Democrats won't have them.

Johnson is only useful as Speaker if he is doing the will of the base. If breaks his promise on the border and funding the war in Ukraine, he's useless.

‘What dem would vote to save Johnson.’

i don’t even agree with your premise.

seems pretty simple to me. on the assumption that Johnson is a uniparty operative (based on his actions i believe that)—if i was obama, i’d arrange for enough votes to keep Johnson in, if Gaetz or MTG or any rep files a motion. that way, Johnson can continue immediately with his and the uniparty agenda. i assume the dissident reps don’t have the balls to continue to file motions ‘till the end of the session.

as for the dems, this close to the election, they’ll either elect Jeffries with rep help, or failing that, and them getting what they want anyway, they might even want to keep Jefferies out and Johnson in. that’s an option for brandon’s handlers to decide.

from our side, it’s probably better, imho, that the dems take control of the whole mess anyway, this close to the election. nothing’s going to be done for our side anyway. since the dems know that, they’ll probably act accordingly to keep the reps on the hot seat.
