Editorial: The validity of scientific expertise will be on display with Monday's eclipse (arrogance barf alert)
St Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | April 7, 2024 | Editors

… What is the value in the coming spectacle, beyond oohs and aahs?

Perhaps it is in the dramatic demonstration that we are all, regardless of our divisive politics and cultural strife today, riding the same floating sphere, one among countless of them, some of which line up in random but beautiful ways from time to time.

Democrats and Republicans alike will look up together in fascination on Monday. It will be a bipartisan moment of galactic proportions.

The eclipse's path will take it far north of Washington, D.C. That's too bad. If there's any crowd that needs reminding of its own insignificance in the universe, it's that one.

Science isn't flawless. But it's infinitely more trustworthy than those who don't trust it: those who blithely assume their favorite cable news hosts know better than medical experts whether vaccines are safe and effective; those who choose to believe the self-serving obfuscation of industry over the sober factual analyses of climate scientists regarding global warming; those who, in service to ideology, denigrate the very notion of objective scientific fact.

Everyone in a position to see it - but especially those who spurn the value of scientific expertise - should make sure they're outside on Monday as the moon slides in front of the sun, right on schedule, exactly as the science has told us it will.

I miss the Old School Eclipse regimen... panic, societal collapse, virgin sacrifice, rise of End of Time charlatans. I think we could use some of that today. Not sure where we’d find the virgins, though.

Also they allow best ideas to rise to the top in a well regulated process, and don’t attempt to enforce dogma (recently, perhaps there was a time but it has passed).

Yeah, big difference between astronomy and climate science is the $$$ behind it. Years ago, astronomers could debate the contentious Big Bang theory (or anything else) in their own circles with the public merely a bystander if anything to the discussion, because the public was not needed to be riled up to support a multi-trillion dollar reorganization of the entire economy based on taking a side in the discussion.

Complete opposite situation with the climate, as you know. Funny how the authors of this editorial can see the malign influence of corporate dollars in the climate debate but not the vaccines debate, or the malign influence of government dollars in any debate.

i use the total eclipse as my argument for intelligent design... how can a big bang throw three celestial bodies into position to cause the corona ring when they all align... and reverse lunar eclipse when the shadow of the earth covers the moon... more than just happenstance... one of God’s gifts to man.

The behavior of “scientists” since 2020 shows that there is no such thing as scientific expertise. At best the scientists and "scientific experts" are whoring government shills, at worst, they’re psychopaths with god complexes.

re: mechanism

There is guy on youtube who has been machining a replica. It is fascinating to watch as he starts with raw metal and does all the work by hand (using modern machining tools). Quite a complex mechanism, and there are parts that can't be accurately imaged even using x-rays.

the validity of scientific expertise, just predicting a path I wouldn’t call expertise

I conducted my own experiments to validate my theory of decreased solar radiation due to the partial eclipse. Timing the reduced melting of ice cubes in my drink. Before the eclipse, fast melting. During the eclipse, slower melting. Unfortunately, I drank it before the end of the eclipse and invalidated the results. I can claim expertise as much as anyone else!
