Thousands of jobs have already been eliminated by California’s law to raise the minimum wage to $20 for restaurant workers, which goes into effect April 1.
For eight years, Michael Ojeda delivered food for a Pizza Hut in Ontario, California, using the income he received to support his family.
In December, the 29-year-old received a letter from the pizza franchise informing him that his employment was being terminated in February. The news shook him.
“Pizza Hut was my career for nearly a decade and with little to no notice it was taken away,” Ojeda said, whose story was recently highlighted by the Wall Street Journal.
Ojeda appears to be just one of the thousands of casualties of a new California law that will raise the minimum wage for fast-food workers to $20 an hour on April 1 for all restaurant chains that have at least 60 locations nationally.
Making $20 instead of $15 sounds like a win, but economics shows there’s no such thing as a free lunch. California lawmakers just proved it.
As usual, the laws of economics laugh at the attempts of humans.
Many people are finding out the real minimum wage:
$0.00 per hour.
oh wow
you can make 40k delivering pizzas
oh wait
you cant
Dems are vote-buying with this legislation paid for by taxpayers.
but for lerturds feelings and wishful thinking are what matters, not actual economic principles
Im sure that this will, in fact, be the first time that top down economic planning will defy market forces and achieve the stated desired result /s
Loss of jobs (and thus benefits) for employees, higher prices for consumers, lower sales, higher costs, less profit for owners. Sounds like a trifecta.
Minimum wage ONLY for fast food?
…$20.00 an hour? Hahaha laughs the owner of Panera Bread and friend of the governor. “No minimum wage for me, because I make bread. Hahaha”
so the Left’s plan was to raise the minimum wage to get citizens fired then lower the minimum wage so they can hire Illegals ? LOL
Most of these restaurants are franchises.
The owners sunk their life savings into them, from 500k for a quiznoes to $2mil for a McD’s, for the privilege of selling the branded food with the national marketing.
Those owners won’t give up overnight. It’ll take a little while as they try to cut other costs, reduce employee #’s, raise prices [to the extent permitted], demand food price / subscription changes from the franchisor, etc.. They’ll do all of it and stretch out the demise for as long as they can. The alternative is to walk away from your investment - few can or will do willingly.
But reality will catch up. Few remaining stores and $20 big macs will be the norm. Not a fast food eater, but many are. And they do employ many otherwise useless workers.
So, yay? Thanks leftists?
With an average tip of about $4 per deliver, he was already making over $20/hr. Now he is making 0. I guess he can try out the gig economy, though CA is trying to destroy that too.
Hey stupid, learn roofing or something. Pizza delivery is not a "career".
Real minimum wage will be welfare.
It’s basic economics coupled with the fact that democrat/communists refuse to acknowledge — much less accept — the realities of normal human behavior ... which is why “well-intended” socialism ultimately devolves into iron-fisted communism when people stop (some never start) behaving as they are required to behave to sustain the socialist “utopia”.
The man managed to make pizza delivery money work for his family. He may not be brilliant, but he is more competant than many who don’t work a job reliably for 10+ years. We shouod honor honest workers at every level. He wasn’t asking for more than the job was worth.
Pizza Hut should never be a career job. It’s fast food, an entry job to teach a person to move on to a career job somewhere else.
Not everyone is capable of developing a career.
It is good to have work opportunities for the actually stupid (half of all Americans are below average, of course), those who screwed up earlier and now are behind, those who prefer or need work that is undemanding, flexible, and part time, those that require no formal degree, those that are temporary, etc.
We are not all careerists and we are not all capable of being careerists. Low skill low effort low pay jobs are still of value and there is no shame in them. Perhaps, for any number of reasons, this is the best this man could do. It is criminally wrong to legislate this work away from him.
BETCHA a thorough AUDIT of what hours are the busiest & MOST profitable-—and other hours will be cut.
