Joe Biden can rest easy. This was not a railway bridge. Amtrak is unaffected.

What the heck does the captain say? I just got up and saw this. I’ve looked around and can’t find a statement from the captain. Who is he and how does HE SAY this happened?

That bridge is where all the Hazmat traffic goes - they can’t use the two tunnels.
Also all of the Amazon traffic runs that bridge.
Major problems.
Everybody in Baltimore now gets to work from home.

Terrorist attack, my first thought.

Could be a woke attack. Francis Scott Key wrote what became the national anthem and owned slaves. When/if they rebuild it, don't expect it to be named after him.

Any thoughts as to insurance, etc? When such a major structure is destroyed, does the ship’s insurance pay to reimburse the cost of reconstruction, etc?

You lose power, have go off course. Corrections take a long time to change 95,000 tons.

The Port of Baltimore handles over a million containers per year.

Lose power, even for a second, means losing steering, loss of steering means the rudder flops where it wants to go, once that happens and regaining power would take some time to correct. Then it loses power again - and plows into a poorly designed bridge that collapses.

What the heck does the captain say?

His employer's lawyers have almost certainly told him to shut the hell up. Liability will be HUGE.

I know that.... it’s a term used by the guys with diesel trucks that tune them to smoke. Their term is rolling coal. I’m told the kit can be purchased on eBay.

why did the pilots not steer the ship center span of the bridge?

Because there was no electrical power to turn the rudder. Steering is not mechanical like on Tupperware.
