SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A state parole board member resigned Monday after recommending the release of a man who a day later attacked a pregnant Chicago woman with a knife and fatally stabbed her 11-year-old son while he tried to protect her, according to authorities.
The Illinois Prisoner Review Board's handling of the case prompted Gov. J.B. Pritzker to order that procedures for dealing with situations involving domestic violence be revamped.
Pritzker announced that LeAnn Miller, 63, of Junction submitted her resignation. Miller had prepared a report recommending Crosetti Brand's release from prison.
The 37-year-old felon had repeatedly violated orders of protection and threatened Laterria Smith of Chicago, police said. On March 13, investigators said that Brand went to Smith's apartment armed with a knife and assaulted her. When her son, Jayden Perkins, intervened, Brand stabbed him to death, police said.
Smith, 33, remains hospitalized in critical condition but doctors expect her and her unborn child to live. Her 6-year-old son was present during the attack but was uninjured.

This is to expand my thoughts, not to evaluate your
thoughts.
I believe there are extenuating circumstances, such as people
that simply don’t have a rap sheet as long as their 12 foot
arm. They do their time, treat the officers with respect,
and show true remorse.
They have a support system back home.
When their parole date shows up, I think they can be trusted
to more than likely do very well.
I’m sure you can use your imagination regarding who not to
trust, by just reversing these traits.
I don’t like to say this, but I do believe their are some
people who were dealt unfairness on the birth circumstance
setting. Again, using your imagination, you know what I
mean.
We can do better, about evaluating the likelihood of
recidivism.
I don’t care about fairness. I only care about the quality
of the person being evaluated.
Our parole and DA people just don’t give a darn. They
let that one guy off, so they think everyone should get
the same treatment. That’s dead wrong thinking, and the
stats should prove it.
I’m not here to say anyone based on their skin color should
not get a break. I only care about the true record, and
the actual chances of serious harm to the public.

Yes, I do think judges should figure in where warranted.
If a reasoned sentence does wind up with a bad outcome, I’m
not as inclined to punish any of these people, but if they
get off on some woke tangent and it costs people their
lives as they have known them, I’m all in on taking these
flawed creatures of the system down.

Doesn’t the Parole Board contain multiple members, not just one person?
Doesn’t at least a majority of the board members have to vote to recommend the governor grant a request for parole?
One person resigning is better than the usual nothing, but it’s just a start.
Hardly. She resigned. It’s not like she’s being held even partially culpable for the (predictable) crimes the perp committed. Should be though - the guy “repeatedly” committed violent acts, so it’s doubtful the fifth, or tenth, time is going to be the charm.
