Calif. fast-food chains slash workers as $20-an-hour minimum wage looms

California restaurants are reportedly laying off staff and reducing hours for other team members in an effort to cut costs ahead of a California state law taking effect on April 1 that will raise fast-foot workers’ hourly wage to $20.

In the months leading up to the wage mandate, California eateries, particularly pizza joints, have established a plan to cut jobs, according to state records obtained by The Wall Street Journal.

Pizza Hut and Round Table Pizza — a Menlo Park, Calif.-founded chain of 400 pizza parlors, mostly on the West Coast — have said they plan to lay off around 1,280 delivery drivers this year, according to records that major employers must submit to the state before large layoffs, The Journal reported.

Pizza Hut already sent notices to employees informing them of their last day.

In San Jose, Calif., Brian Hom, the owner of two locations of Vitality Bowls, has dealt with impending increased labor costs by running his Açaí bowl joints with two employees instead of his typical four, according to The Journal.

As a result, it takes longer for customers to receive their order, which has also increased in price by around 10% to offset higher wages.

The true minimum wage has always been zero.

In the old days, workers had to pay their employer for permission to come to work.

Can’t CA Dems simply pass a law making it illegal for businesses to lay off or fire minimum wage employees?

Asking for a friend.

We went to at a local Mexican fast food joint over the weekend - I ordered a tostada and a drink, a fiesta burrito, shrimp bowl (with few shrimp in it) and a small, plain chicken breast - came to $65 - and they wanted a tip, LOL.

American owned? Or Mexican owned?

So they won’t have the help anymore to keep the place clean. This minimum wage raise will be great for cockroaches and rats.

Drive thru/carry out only.

Dining room closed.

You vote for the liberals, you lost your job as a direct result. Kindly remember in November how the liberals who “helped” you sent you to the unemployment line.

If you continue to vote for liberals and their feel-good policies that look great until they can’t make simple math agree with their unicorn-kisses policies.

If only we could make math say what we want it to based on our feelings.

Only a moron like Gavin Newsom wouldn’t have seen the consequences.

He knows the consequences all too well. 99% of fast food workers will vote for Newsome because he gave them a raise. 50% of fast food executive will still vote for Newsome because liberal = stupidity. But even if 99% of fast food executives vote against Newsom, there are many more hourly workers than executives, and so Newsome wins 100 votes for every vote he loses. And the fast food industry will continue to contribute to Newsom's campaign, because if they don't, then the next law or regulation could be even worse for the industry.

Most Union contracts are tied in some way to the minimum wage, so an increase in minimum wage ultimately results in an increase in Union wages. That's why the Unions fight so hard for this.

I would encourage the fast food industry to take a stand and
simply close all west coast facilities.

We’ll see how that flies.

Our leaders are totally out of control.

Acai bowls are $50.

Went to KFC for a piece of chicken this week, a single fried chicken wing was $2.69.

Even here in Woodstock, Georgia there is no line at our McDonalds or Wendy’s drive through at lunchtime. Burger King closed. Chic-fil-A has a doable drive through now, which before had lines out into the street.

I don’t see how these places are staying in business.
