68 Percent of College Students Say Free Speech Protections Should Extend to Threats, Inciting Violence: Poll

More than two-thirds of college students say free speech protections on campuses should extend even to individuals who are inciting violence or threatening others, according to an Axios Vibes survey conducted by The Harris Poll and released Thursday.

The poll found 68 percent of students agreed with free speech protection extending to inciting violence. Free speech was a top-three concern for students, behind only tuition and safety.

While the support for even potentially inciting free speech protections appears bipartisan, the survey found it is somewhat split among gender lines, backed by 74 percent of men and only 61 percent of women. The survey comes at a tumultuous time for universities as they have navigated how to handle the Israel-Palestine conflict.

People should be incarcerated for rape, murder, and other outright crimes. So let’s concentrate on real crimes and REAL criminals that are being flown into our country from around the world.
You can’t control everyone’s speech environment by taking away free speech.
This is one of those outrageous ideas trying to control everyone and turn us into robots. People need to deal with WORDS. We are raising a generation of environmentally protected pussys by taking away free speech.

What?!? These must be a different class of student than the ones who thought up such terms as “micro-aggressions” and “deadnaming”.

A bit of a discrepancy.

"68 Percent of College Students Say Free Speech Protections Should Extend to Threats, Inciting Violence: Poll"

Should I assume that those same 68% never threaten those they do not agree with?

This contradicts every survey I’ve ever seen of college students. I suspect it’s being used to justify speech restrictions.

Inciting violence would need to have a strict legal definition. If I say, “I don’t like ____ “ that does not appear to incite violence. If I say, “let’s get together with clubs and go cause trouble at the place where ___ gather” then that does appear to incite violence.

If I say “if ____ keep doing what they have been doing, I would not be surprised to see violence,” again, it does not rise to the test, and could be interpreted as helpful advice to _____ not to do _____. But it would depend on what judge or jury you were facing, I suppose.

Then, if free speech should extend to inciting violence, then I assume they support misgendering and removing all their little hurt feelings safe spaces on campus.
