The buzz around electric vehicles is wearing off.
For years, the automotive industry has been in a state of EV euphoria. Automakers trotted out optimistic sales forecasts for electric models and announced ambitious targets for EV growth. Wall Street boosted valuations for legacy automakers and startup entrants alike, based in part on their visions for an EV future.
Now the hype is dwindling, and companies are again cheering consumer choice. Automakers from Ford Motor and General Motors to Mercedes-Benz , Volkswagen , Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin are scaling back or delaying their electric vehicle plans.

IMHO the US automakers were pressured by FedGov to get onboard with the GND foolishness or else the CAFE and other regs would be tweaked so high as to put recalcitrant automakers out of business. FedGov knows that it could not get away with a total ban of ICE powered vehicles but it can regulate them out of existence.

And yet, the rental companies are dumping their EV’s. Not sure if I only read biased reporting, but serious issues with EV’s seem insurmountable.

That’s the bubble. The auto makers and the regulators and the politicians are inside their own bubble. So they self reinforced their ideas and created rationalizations. Only the Japanese figured it out on their own - they are committed to ICE alongside EV.
EV can work in some areas though the infrastructure isn’t exactly ready. West coast of USA and metro south areas can do it. Dense cities are harder as you don’t want to stack 50 charging stations inside a structure with a lot of people. Rural areas even more difficult. Sub Saharan Africa? Forget about it.
Tesla is doing it about as close to right as possible. They have more than a decade head start and most of the market. They have excellent lease deals so you can give the car back before the battery becomes a problem ( that may resolve itself in time) because the car is essentially disposable if you can’t afford a new battery pack in 10 or so years. Of course that also means you don’t own it so there is uncertainty as a trade off). They have great technology with sonar and heat sensor tech on a path towards fully autonomous driving (also a long ways from being fully unleashed but the safety features of all that tech are working now). They have their own charging network. And they cherry picked the best markets. Most of the low hanging fruit has been plucked. All competitors have a steep uphill battle.
Now add in future predictive problems. We - and i specifically mean California but a lot of the country - don’t have an electric grid to handle much more. Using energy from 4-9 pm triples your cost. That’s a problem.
What is Toyota who figured all this out? They make EV but they are still heavy in ICE and don’t want to transition at this point. There are places in the world that may not be ready for EV for decades, there is a large segment of the people who don’t want it, and those who do want it already have it. The Japanese are not in that bubble of US regulatory-industry-politics.
They were renting them for about half the cost of normal cars — which, of course, is what attracted me to them. Undoubtedly another taxpayer-funded subsidy scheme to “condition” drivers. Nearly worked, in my case — the cars are fabulous (when everything works - and we never had a problem. And you wouldn’t believe my rental budget for last year).
They were probably making only a skinny profit on the rentals, and eventually some of the employees confided in me (because I was there so often, probably) that the repair costs are high. $1k for a windshield, for example.
They’ll be no salvation with any initiative brought on by the amish or amish-lovers.

Oh, the rather complex rules, with the phase in and exemptions, pretty much covers that, allowing SOME exceptions, but +90% of drivers will be stuck with no NEW CAR purchase choice but EV. The jokes about New Mexico looking like Havana with nothing but old cars on the streets in a couple of decades are already out there. These states with these stupid rules will become the magnet for all the used cars in the country. Of course, the left is already talking about ways to close that loophole as well…no registration for vehicles over 10 years old, EXPENSIVE registration for vehicles over 10 years old, etc.
Correct, the main reason WHY I have not bought an EBIKE is because I do not want a 72Volt battery charging in MY GARAGE attached to my house.
Especially since the only thing protecting me is that 5/8” thick Type X drywall.
The guy sitting next to me in my office has a Tesla Y. I tell him that I really appreciate when he parks it at the other end of the parking lot because I do not want to park my Tacoma next to it. He thought I was kidding. I am not. I will NOT park next to an EV if possible. Especially a charging EV.
