Gen Z has no time for the corporate grind. Are they lazy or smart?

Generation Z is ditching the corporate grind in spades.

According to a new study by Credit Karma, among Gen Z U.S. adults ages 18+, 60% say traditional 9 to 5 jobs are "soul-sucking," with 43% saying they have no desire to work a traditional 9 to 5 job at all.

While there’s been no discussion of whether or not this trend applies more to women than to men, much of the discussion about this topic suggests women are leading the charge—which makes sense, since social media, a largely female space, is in part why young women don’t want to work traditional full-time jobs.

What the hell are they going to do? Starting a business takes a lot of sweat.

” social media, a largely female space,”

That makes sense, from what I see of the faces glued to their damn iFags.

Because wages aren’t good relative to cost of living, many are just staying at their parents house and not working.
I’m just explaining. I don’t know any of these people.

Sometimes the pay is so low you are paying to work when you throw in transportation.

That’s part of the equation but not all.

social media, a large female space,

Fixed it.

(I’ve never seen so many fat, young people in my life.)

They either have to live with Mom and Dad or get an apartment with several roommates. Neither one is very appealing. When they do work, though, they tend to be lazy, scatterbrained, and call in sick a lot. It was different when I was young. We could get apartments more cheaply, but then we had bills to pay, so we darned well had to buckle down and be good employees. In a way I feel sorry for young people today, in a way not.

I don’t really blame them. The corporate culture has flatlined as far as any realy opportunity goes.

The best thing they can do is learn a trade and work there.

Smart
The grind sucks and everybody knows it.
That’s why they call it the grind.

Lots of options for young, smart, capable people today.
It’s a new world.

If you look into wages vs cost of living, the trajectory has been uneven for multiple decades.

Feminism has largely destroyed the competence of the American workplace. Perhaps this will be the start of restoring it, if the lazy, ditzy slackers stay in Mommy’s basement and the men get back to work.

I do blame them.

There’s plenty not to like about working in the corporate world, but in my experience only a tiny fraction of these young people even have enough exposure to adult life to know the difference between a rewarding job and a “soul sucking” one.

I suspect most of them would consider anything more rigorous than campus life at a party school to be grueling to the point of slavery.

They can only afford to be lazy while they live in mom's house.

It doesn’t bode well for many.

I also hear many are charging up debt with zero intention to pay a penny back.

I expect serious economic issues to occur sooner than later in banking.

Interesting times.

Apparently Gen Z is not bothered by the $34,000,000,000,000 in federal debt dumped on them. Then again most of them probably don’t even know about the money they owe themselves and millions of illegals draining resources to name just a couple, they are in a world of pain and don’t even know it.

I don’t. There are no promotions in corporate anymore, because those in the upper management are not retiring.

If a young person gets a job on the bottom, he stays there. That’s the nature of corporate today.

I agree with you that the Milleniums are not made of sterner stuff like the Generation X or older generations. I will give you that.
