U.S. government officials have grown alarmed that the Haiti National Police could begin to crumble within hours — and that a long-planned multinational mission led by Kenya to provide reinforcements may not be enough to save the country from a complete descent into gang control.
Outgunned Haitian police have been battling a united front of gangs and losing key firefights. Now, a potential power void and a collapse of the Haitian government that had already faced a skeptical public risks undermining whatever morale is left among the police forces.
“The government could fall at any time,” a U.S. official told McClatchy, speaking on the condition of anonymity to candidly discuss the government assessment. “If the HNP dissolves as an effective counterforce, if we see the airport or the presidential palace fall, it’s over.”
The Biden administration is moving urgently to expedite the deployment of a Multinational Security Support mission, or MSS, that has been in the works for over a year and a half. Kenya has pledged to lead the mission and committed 1,000 police officers to the effort last fall.
But the force size of the Haiti National Police is “orders of magnitude less than required,” the U.S. official added. Adding 1,000 more boots on the ground — even if they are well-armed, well-trained, and deployed immediately — is unlikely to meet the demands of the crisis.
The Biden administration has ruled out contributing U.S. forces to the mission, with Pentagon leadership fiercely opposed to any deployment.

A State Department official told McClatchy the entire Biden administration had been “seized with this issue” on Wednesday, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken joining meetings with leadership at the White House and National Security Council.

Stop the civil war in Russia
In 1915 Woodrow Wilson sent in the Marines, and we occupied Haiti till 1934. Maybe Biden will want to try it again. If he doesn’t send them to Ukraine first.
1) Send tens of billions of dollars to Haiti, with no idea what happens to it or who really has hands on it.
2) Airlift and ship tens of thousands of Haitian refugees to the United States.
3) Provocatively get in between major powers and civil war factions in Haiti including facing threats of WWIII from world leaders.
Wall it off and be done with it.
Wall it off and be done with it.
Defund the popo.
Too many blacks in Haiti are incarcerated.
Cannibals? Who knew?
I’ve had a few encounters with Haitians and liked those people. One ran the Haitian art gallery at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan Puerto Rico. Stunningly handsome man, polite and knew about art. I bought an oil painting from him for $100, came home, had it framed for $150 and I’m looking at it right now. Probably worth well over $800 today..
When I lived in South Florida, Haitians were coming over in small boats. Met a few working at grocery stores. Invariably polite, hardworking too. My cranky neighbor was in the hospital for a week and she said the Haitians cleaning the rooms were better to her than the nurses who were supposedly taking care of her. Brought her glasses of water, helped her sit up, etc.
Voodoo you trust in this situation?
I forget the name of the dictator of Haiti in the 90s but he was making noise for a few weeks, Bill Clinton rattled the saber a bit, and Rush Limbaugh predicted that Clinton would fly some troops towards Haiti and the dictator would make it appear that he blinked while accepting a deal.
Well, something like 29 soldiers were issued one magazine of 15 rounds, loaded on a C-130 and it takes off.
Then the “strong man” of Haiti stepped down and “left”, later said to have accepted some suitcases of cash or something like that.
The media fawned over the flying some troops as some great diplomatic strength or something.
“Baby Doc” Duvalier.
Very cuddly POS.
I forget exactly who it was, Haiti throughout the 90s was a mess.
>If the Haitian “government” fell, would anyone notice?
If Haiti just disappeared would anybody notice
Just keep every.single.one.of.them. out of the USA
Their Dominican neighbors would suddenly feel tranquility, perhaps?
How could the Communist Party of China benefit from this? If there is a way, that is what Joe Biden will do.
They can’t be very alarmed about it because this is what they are trying to do to us.
They’re probably watching very closely to see what happens to see how to proceed with us next.
The island of Hispaniola is thousands of times more populated than Guam, so according to the Hank Johnson Principle, it may certainly capsize.
If Haiti sinks, then the Dominican Republic would be thrust upwards. A huge cataclysm, I tell ya!
Russia’s Wagner Group could clean this up quickly. We should ask for their help.
