Greenland start-up is being accused of doing titanic damage to the environment by shipping ice from glaciers over 100,000 years old to be used in cocktails served at high-priced bars in Dubai.
Arctic Ice, which started this year, touts its product as the “oldest and purest” ice in the world as it is harvested from icebergs in Greenland — a distance of more than 4,730 miles from the Middle Eastern megalopolis.
Though the makers say they hope to highlight global warming’s effects on ice sheets with the their business model — and even stop sea levels from rising — the scheme is getting a frosty reception.
“Guys. This is nuts,” one person wrote in the comments section on Arctic Ice’s Instagram page in response to a promotional video. “The planet is freaking burning.”
The company’s website hammers home the point that the ice destined to chill drinks in glitzy watering holes halfway around the world is taken from icebergs already naturally detached from the glacier and floating in Greenland’s Nuuk fjord.
“We do not take any ice from the glacier. Millions or billions of tons of ice breaks off the glaciers every year,” the site stresses. “Our very limited production thereby has a very insignificant impact.”
More so, Arctic Ice argues that by using icebergs that would otherwise melt into the ocean, it is preventing the ice from contributing to rising sea levels.
A selected chunk of iceberg is carefully inspected before being hoisted with a crane onto the company’s ship, where it is splintered into smaller pieces with sanitized chainsaws and hammers, and packed into insulted food-grade crates for transport.
Samples are then taken from each iceberg and sent to a third-party lab to be tested for the presence of any potentially harmful ancient microorganisms or bacteria.

Strange that you mention a P-38. Depending on the degree of your interest and your finances, you may be interested in this: Rumor has it that there are some on or near Shemya. When WWII ended there apparently were some left over on Shemya. The typical approach to left over military equipment was to bury it or dump it in the ocean. I saw on the internet that this could have happened here to the P-38s. I happened to spend a few weeks on Shemya in the mid 70s and roamed the island. There us a longer runway up a little higher now, but there seems to be traces of the old runway down on the flats which are westerly of the new runway. I did not go down there to explore that area. If that is where they are, they were buried with a bulldozer and are probably scrunched ups. If they were taken out to sea, they probably in better shape.
During the Clinton regime we had some work related to the part of Regan’s Star Wars. At one time A trip to Shemya seemed to be possible. At that time I had the GEM-1, a type of mapping metal detector. If I could have inveigled that trip, I would taken the GEM-1 along somehow and searched the area for any buried P-38s. Didn’t happen.
The people drinking the ice eventually pee most it in the ocean....it evaporates and is carried around...some of it gets refrozen into ice at higher altitudes....just think of all the carbon sequestration which will occur when Greenland starts growing plants. And all tundra areas start growing trees.
I guess the A-rabs do buy that ice!

Muddled government in the way of that opportunity. Greenland is owned by Denmark, at least until Trump buys it for us from them. Legal issues are straightforward. Antarctic Treaty isn’t friendly to capitalists, and may not allow this where it applies. Maybe you could harvest bergs that floated enough north to escape treaty bounds….
