McConnell Will Step Down As The Senate Republican Leader In November

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving Senate leader in history who maintained his power in the face of dramatic convulsions in the Republican Party for almost two decades, will step down from that position in November.

McConnell, who turned 82 last week, was set to announce his decision Wednesday in the well of the Senate, a place where he looked in awe from its back benches in 1985 when he arrived and where he grew increasingly comfortable in the front row seat afforded the party leaders.

“One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” he said in prepared remarks obtained by The Associated Press. “So I stand before you today ... to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”

His decision punctuates a powerful ideological transition underway in the Republican Party, from Ronald Reagan’s brand of traditional conservatism and strong international alliances, to the fiery, often isolationist populism of former President Donald Trump.

McConnell said he plans to serve out his Senate term, which ends in January 2027, “albeit from a different seat in the chamber.” Aides said McConnell’s announcement about the leadership post was unrelated to his health. The Kentucky senator had a concussion from a fall last year and two public episodes where his face briefly froze while he was speaking.

As usual, the AP is willfully ignorant about the GOP.

But that is a 4 year gig. Leader is as long as he functions. I’d like to see Ken Paxton as AG

often isolationist populism of former President Donald Trump

The Lying Leftist AP will never get it "right".

The LEFT, not the Patriotic Right, are the ones who get us into wars.

Unlike the Delusional Lying Left, Trump and America Patriots believe in American (and others') national sovereignty and eschew meddling in others' affairs. That isn't "isolationist", that is common sense and respect for other nations' right to work out their own issues.

But the Left has NO common sense nor respect for anyone. All they want is worldwide totalitarian government.

Just heard McConnell speak—he said the death of his Sister-in-Law had something to do with his stepping down. A very suspicious death with, so far, no answers and very conveniently timed.

He’ll do all the damage to Trump that he can by then.

I'm expecting him to say he won't endorse Trump and bash him thus hurting the ability of the Senate, he claims he reveres, to gain the majority. Like all pols, it's all about him.

Yes, Cruz would be great, or Josh Hawley, JD Vance. But it will probably be another RINO who replaces McConnell.

With all the advances in modern taxidermy, he might just make it that long.

Who should the next leader be? I hope they’ll choose Sen. Mike Rounds, of SD. He’s been a senator since 2015, and he was a governor for eight years. Here are some of his interest group ratings: National Right to Life Committee, 100%; Numbers USA, 100%; Americans for Prosperity, 100%; AFL-CIO-14%; ADA, 0%; and NEA, 0%.

I think Cruz would have more support in the Senate, being one of them.

Paxton would probably want to be Lt. Governor of Texas if Dan Patrick runs to replace Greg Abbott.

Who replaces him? Another swamp creature or a Trump supporter?

His replacement it critical. We can't replace him with a Paul Ryan backstabber.

The governor has said he will appoint a Democrat and the State Senate can pound sand.

Don’t be so quick to advocate that McConnell leave the senate forthwith as the RAT Gov. of KY. Has stated he’d appoint a RAT to replace McConnell.

Where on earth did that come from? He hasn't expressed an iota of a wish to pass on.

Sadly,, being leader is all about who raises the most money.

Paul is not for sale, so he’s a terrible money raiser.

I am good friends with two Congressmen. The way the RNC works is increasing monetary obligations as you get seniority and authority.

It’s pure pay to have say. Truly disgusting.
