Federal Judge’s NIL Ruling Throws NCAA Into Chaos: ‘Turning Upside Down’
New York Post ^ | Feb. 23, 2024 | Andrew Battifarano

A preliminary injunction could be a boon for college athletes. A federal judge ruled on Friday that the NCAA cannot enforce its name, image and likeness rules that block student-athletes from negotiating deals with boosters.

The ruling would allow those athletes in the recruiting process or in the transfer portal to negotiate NIL deals without breaking NCAA rules. Judge Clifton Corker wrote on Friday that “the NCAA’s prohibition likely violates federal antitrust law and harms student-athletes.”

“While the NCAA permits student-athletes to profit from their NIL, it fails to show how the timing of when a student-athlete enters such an agreement would destroy the goal of preserving amateurism,” Corker added.

Included in that REAL degree were sports-being paid for with money that would otherwise be spent on education.

It may sound good making fun of exploited illiterates but it does not make sense.

We’re talking stone age. Billy “the thrill” Magill, All American, blew out his knee at Utah, found illiterate and homeless and that was almost 60yrs ago.

Sports are necessary as a distraction from the communist indoctrination currently that is the principal purpose in all collage classrooms...

It's before my time, but that's not exactly what I heard about Bill McGill. His knee problem started in high school, and he played in the pros almost ten years.

I heard a sportswriter found him living on the streets, and helped him get a job at Hughes Aircraft that he kept over 20 years.

I don't know if he was illiterate, but the NBA got him to speak to rookies about the importance of education.

The key to that story is that he had a college degree from Utah and was illiterate. I did an awful job guessing at the spelling. lol

Going back to the real student athlete days entails going back generations at this point.

There was Jack Kemp. He could read and write, but unfortunately he couldn’t speak. Didn’t make a good VP candidate.

Fans, boosters and school administrators can stop this silly charade of pretending they care if the starting QB for the Alabama Crimson Tide and the All-American defensive end for the Michigan Wolverines are actually students at those universities.

That would certainly be the most honest solution. So I don't see it being implemented.

UNC told the NCAA that their fake classes for fake students for basketball and football players were legitimate, as long as a few regular students played that game. And then the NCAA played along too.

The next law suit will challenge eligibility requirements like needing to pass a minimum number of classes each year.

If you want college sports, you’ll need to tune into Division II and below. Division I is now just a farm system for the pros. I never send money to my Alma Maters.

But the rest, never.

Speaking of the Seminoles:

"He doesn't know the meaning of the word fear. In fact, I just saw his grades and he doesn't know the meaning of a lot of words." ~ Bobby Bowden on one of his players

Right- meanwhile these kids put their bodies on the line- especially in football- and the NCAA and schools make billions and billions of $$$$ every year tax free

And how much money do those players on the football team help deposit into the schools bank account?

Separate sports from higher education.

Make sports a “minor league” for each individual sport, and leave colleges and universities earn their money by providing quality education- and compete for intelligent students.

“..these kids put their bodies on the line..”

These kids put their bodies on the line for love of the game and a chance to move on to the big leagues. Most players dream of playing in the next higher level.

If one is concerned about the money made by universities, then do something about admission costs and the cancerous TV/radio contracts. But don’t change an amateur sport into professional one.

The student athlete era is over. College sports is now a business. I do not donate to my grocery store.

Good. The illusion of amateurism was always wrong. Athletes should be able to be paid. The NCAA was always evil in all this. End them.

No. The NCAA will cease to exist. That’s what the death of the PAC sets up. Now there’s 4 super conferences, so they can make nice clean playoff trees, and tell the NCAA to #$%^ off. Maybe the lower divisions of NCAA will continue to exist. But D1 is going to leave them entirely.

In the mid 60s I was the math tutor for the athletic department in an ACC school. My students went to class and passed their math courses. The school cared about the academic side.

Everybody should be paid for what they do. It’s insane, and frankly evil, that the people putting in the most risk of life altering injury during the games aren’t allowed to be paid. Coaches get paid, trainers get paid, PAY THE ATHLETES.
