It's before my time, but that's not exactly what I heard about Bill McGill. His knee problem started in high school, and he played in the pros almost ten years.

I heard a sportswriter found him living on the streets, and helped him get a job at Hughes Aircraft that he kept over 20 years.

I don't know if he was illiterate, but the NBA got him to speak to rookies about the importance of education.

The key to that story is that he had a college degree from Utah and was illiterate. I did an awful job guessing at the spelling. lol

Going back to the real student athlete days entails going back generations at this point.
