Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday he would not consider being Donald Trump’s running mate one day after the former president confirmed the former 2024 rival was on his “short list” — with DeSantis revealing that he was looking at other prospects, including another White House bid in four years.
“People were mentioning me [as a potential vice president]. I am not doing that,” DeSantis told Republicans his presidential campaign had recruited to be delegates to this summer’s nominating convention during a thank-you call, audio of which was shared exclusively with The Post.
The 45-year-old also went in-depth about who he thinks Trump could and should choose as his No. 2.
“I know some people are really actively seeking it. It seems to me, just from watching kind of the body language and stuff, that you have a handful of folks who seem to be auditioning for it,” he said.
“My criteria was, basically, I need someone who can do the job if it came to that, and I would have been the third-youngest president elected so chances are, actuarily I would probably be in pretty good shape, but you never know what else can happen, it’s happened before.”
“So you need someone who can just go in, day one, no problem, they can do the job,” DeSantis went on, arguing that he would have been “partial to governors” had his campaign advanced that far.
“I’m not sure that those are necessarily going to be the criteria that Donald Trump uses. I think he’s going to probably use different criteria. I’ve heard that they are looking more at identity politics. I think that’s a mistake. I think you should just focus on who you think the best person for the job would be.”

the DERPS/UniParty are still hoping for life after death...
Meatball, like Cruz or Jeb will never be President.
He’s said repeatedly that he wasn’t interested in being Vice President. He believes he can be more effective as Governor.
Did Trump say he was on short list?
Who knows what the political landscape will be in 2028?
History tells us that many nominees do not get the nomination the very first time they run in presidential primaries.
If Trump wins this year, his running mate will be a strong contender in 2028, but being Trump’s VP doesn’t mean he or she will be the odds on favorite.
o you disagree with him about identity politics? As a conservative, I don’t want Trump to play identity politics either. That’s what Democrats do.
If he believes that Tim Scott or Vivek Ramaswamy or Kristi Noem is the best person to help him win and to take over should somethign happen to him, that’s who he should pick. But picking one of those people becuase he or she is black or Indian or female is exactly the kind of racism that got us Kamala Harris and Ketanji Brown Jackson.
I agree with Ron on this.
RDS shoots himself in the foot, yet again.
This whole line of questions is unnecessary and distracting. Maybe Trump is feeling desparate like Cruz in 2015. Will he rush out a lame pick comparable to Fiorina? And as Trump has bad history of picking bad people or turning good people against him, I guess this is very possible.
Laura presented these names to Trump at a townhall and all he said was that they’d all be good choices because he’s learned politics and he’s learned to be diplomatic. Only a self-centered person would feel the need to keep sniping to Trump about it.
It’s still early in the campaign.
If Trump called him up, I’m guessing he’d sign up in a heartbeat.
Who are you accusing of sniping at Trump?
An interviewer asked Trump if he would pick a VP from a list of names including DeSantis that the interviewer provided. I think all Trump said was that was a good list.
Speculation on who the VP pick will be is a waste of time, there's six months to go before the Convention.
The choice for the Vice President is kind of like the last cookie on the plate - somebody will eventually take it, but nobody wants to look eager to reach for it.
If Trump says he wants YOU, who is to say to him, No?
Trump already knows who he is going to pick. He's just waiting for the right time to tell the rest of us.
“he’s not ruling out 2028 run”
He’s pretty much toast now. If only he had waited until 2028.
True, but Trump did mention his name
No. Laura Ingraham did that.
