Championship parades likely to change in wake of shooting at Chiefs Super Bowl celebration

BOSTON (AP) — With back-to-back Super Bowl victories for the hometown Chiefs, Kansas City football fans gathered for another championship parade and a second celebratory pep rally in a row.

Don’t expect there to be a third.

Not because the Chiefs, with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes still just 28 years old, can’t win another NFL title. But even if they do, officials are unlikely to allow so many fans in one place to cheer them on, security experts said in the wake of Wednesday’s shooting just after the rally had ended.

“They have to think twice about having these parades,” said former Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans, who in 38 years with the department worked 12 championship parades and the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. “When you have that many people hanging around in one place, nothing good’s going to happen.”

As many as 1 million fans turned out to cheer on the Chiefs on Wednesday, three days after their 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58. The event included a parade down Grand Boulevard, followed by a rally in front of Union Station.

The celebratory music was still playing when gunfire broke out in the crowd. A mother of two was killed and 22 others were injured — half of them under the age of 16. Two teens were in custody, Police Chief Stacey Graves said.

The Kansas City violence is part of a troubling trend in which sports celebrations turn deadly, with alcohol often the fuel and guns the spark that ignite violence.

Just in the last year at least 10 people were wounded when gunfire broke out in downtown Denver amid fans celebrating the Nuggets’ NBA title...

Authorities over the years have lost their nerve and allowed rampant rioting to go unpunished.

If, early on in the history of street rioting, the authorities had positioned several 12” water cannons in the area to keep the celebrants “cooled off,” the crowds would be MUCH better behaved!

I daresay that an incipient riot could be “cooled down” PDQ, if the authorities had any intestinal fortitude at all!

[The mental image I have is ass-over-teakettle rioters deserting the street being swept by the water cannon!]

Allowing street rioters to go unpunished and commit rampant mayhem is a sure way to guarantee more street riots and mayhem!

As for the KC shooting, that will probably be proven to be a shoot-out between rival gang members. Hangem!

Between the various levels of sport we have what? Half a dozen of these a year? And something bad happened this time. We didn’t stop having marathons after the bombing. Better security I’m sure. But they didn’t stop.

I was happy for the Red Sox; I remember 2004 quite well.

Happy because I always feel sorry for a) true underdogs who never do well and b) teams that do real well but never “punch it through”. Boston was b).

Plus, my poor grandfather, a huge baseball fan and fan of Red Sox at least since they all moved to Maine (c.40s the first time), never got to see a WS win. We went to the HOF in the ‘80s and could only buy him a 1918 beer stein for Red Sox. :-(

As an Oriole fan who managed to get to game 2 of the series there, I feel that God had a hand in the Rangers winning it all.

The only team - quietly - to avoid the homo/trannie garbage. Ostensibly so as not to offend their “one” Christian player.

But so be it. No homos, they win. Hhhmmm.

I’ve honestly never understood the mindset of wanting to go out and destroy after your team wins. Makes zero sense.

But it applies all around. Dems don’t dare “manhandle” their precious preferred thug groups. They must be allowed “room to destroy” - even if it’s just common every-day thuggery, as this likely was (”he done dissed me”; or “he din bring me dmoney fow the hash”).

So, we have common but rampant thievery and murder in all our black Dem cities.

The riots are a natural outgrowth of that enabling.

But this is how they handle their many, many preferred aggrieved groups. We cannot beat the hell out of Moslems because - that would upset them and make them attack us more.
