Google enables OS upgrades for older PCs post-Windows 10 support cutoff

Google will allow businesses to install an auto-updating version of the Chrome operating system to Windows devices, potentially preventing millions of PCs from hitting landfills after Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab ends support for Windows 10 next year, parent company Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab said on Wednesday.

The company said ChromeOS Flex will continue receiving regular security updates and features like data encryption, allowing users to keep using their Windows 10 systems.

Microsoft has said that its Windows 10 will reach the end of support on Oct. 14 2025, and will no longer provide regular security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. It has asked customers to transition to Windows 11 or explore other options.

However, a report from Canalys Research suggests that the termination of Windows 10 support could send about 240 million PCs to landfills, as demand for devices without security updates could be low.

Still, many PCs with Windows 10 could remain functional for years after the end of OS support.

ChromeOS is significantly less popular than other operating systems. In January 2024, it held a 1.8% share of the worldwide desktop OS market, far behind Windows' share of about 73%, according to data from research firm Statcounter.

ChromeOS has struggled with wider adaptability due to its incompatibility with legacy Windows applications and productivity suites used by businesses.

I don’t remember.

Who said that?

https://www.pcworld.com/article/394724/why-is-there-a-windows-11-if-windows-10-is-the-last-windows.html

Lot of “unnofficial” claims were touted to say Window’s 10 was supposed to be the last windows.

“windows as a service” model was definitely touted in the past with windows 10. No one believed it then, I don’t believe Win 11 is the final OS either.

These companies like using both strategies of service license model and a retail copy model to charge as both as a stand alone and a subscription.

Apple has a much better way to make their tablets obsolete. Since their OS is hardwired, older IPads just can’t accept newer updates. Soon after, the apps stop working on the older system, forcing users to get a newer IPad.

Any company that allows a CCP-controlled company to “auto-update” anything deserves the disaster that will follow. Treat Chrome as the cancer that it is.
At the very least pick up un-Googled Chromium. It is clean.

I was just given a newer but used pc (notebook) laptop with windows 360 on it. It was horrible! This thing only has 4 gigs of memory and 125g harddrive and slow as mud. Even thee builtin mouse didn’t act right. Windows tends to be a hog in every way. So, I dumped it, found a version of linux that I like and it works like a champ! The difference is amazing.

Don’t throw your computer away just because the operating system gets old. Just put a more secure OS onn it. Linux is free and it is supported for 5 years. The new os to update is free, and the next one is free and so on.

You will feel like you have a brand new computer! Its customisable and theres hundreds of new softwares available ..free...for it.

Linux mint is most like windows and their offfice suite works with windows office suite.

Sometimes there are hardware issues like the sound not working for example. They will look at the system report and yell you wat to do to fix it. Free.

Linux is the base operating software on your cell phone. The companies then custonize it for their needs. It’s a good operating system.

There’s a learning curve, but windows has a learning curve too if you aren’t already used to it. My linux mint is laid out like windows used to be..with a home button and access to all your softwares.

If you want a new softwate, you just browes the sòftware store, select and push the install button. Just like the app store on your phone.

If you have a samsung phone, you plug it into your pc, and the pc will automatically detect your connection and you are on line!

All I know is that I took a slow laptop and made it work right with a more secure os. I don’t even need a virus scanner. It’s built in and also has a firewall you can turn on.

Don’t throw away your pc or laptop. Wipe windows, install linux, and give it to somrone in need, for free.

Now why would a PC World article need a headline like that?

There’s a blaring and obvious reason that would be the headline, no?

Windows 10 pre-installed and do NOT want 11

Your choices are:

1.) Run W10 without security updates

2.) Upgrade to W11

3.) Replace W10 with another OS

This offering from Google does NOT provide Windows 10 support. It is ChromeOS, not Windows.

From the article:

ChromeOS has struggled with wider adaptability due to its incompatibility with legacy Windows applications and productivity suites used by businesses.
You're getting a different ball of wax entirely, as I read it. You just get to use the old hardware, with ChromeOS.
