maybe she’s trying to limit the number of questions they can ask by giving long rambling answers.

I agree. He gets what the lawyers are getting at and must know how Willis and Wade were hedging their answers.
He's letting it play out so they can't appeal later because of his actions.
It will still come down to his ruling on this later, and he doesn't seem to be giving any indications based on his own behaviors.
