A Texas man was shot to death after breaking into a truck while the owner was asleep inside, with a rifle in reach, officials say.
Deputies responded to the scene of a shooting overnight at an apartment complex in north Houston, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a Feb. 13 post on X, formerly Twitter.
The owner of a truck awoke to find another man inside the vehicle, having broken in, Gonzalez said, and the owner opened fire with an AR-15.
The alleged thief died at the scene, Gonzalez said, adding that he was “possibly armed with pistols.”
Deputies say the man only happened to be sleeping in his truck that night because he had gotten into a fight with his girlfriend, KRIV reported.
It’s likely the accused thief didn’t notice there was anyone inside the truck, investigators told KHOU.
“They shouldn’t be out doing it in the first place. I don’t believe that he realized that the reportee was sleeping in this truck before it was too late,” Sgt. Ben Beall told the station.
Deputies said at least three other vehicles appeared to have been broken into before the accused thief targeted the truck, KRIV reported.

When I was 5 years old, we were behind a VW Beatle when the driver pulled a 357 Magnum and blew his girlfriend’s brains out. He was an off duty cop. He then shot and killed himself.
Amazing how events like that get played over and over in your head for the rest of your life.
She had a white coat on with a white fur trim around the hood. I remember seeing her brains splattered all over the white fur from the exit wound.
It was winter, so all the car windows were up when he shot her. I’ve often wondered how loud that must have been.
In Houston you always lock your residence and vehicles.
...and have your truck stolen?
That's actually not a bad neighborhood. It's right behind one of the auto dealership rows with half a dozen dealerships across both sides of I-45.
That's probably why somebody tried to steal a truck at the apartment complex.

Sure there was! Someone to draw the chalk line around the body! Except it was a criminal instead of a victim!
Robert Francis O’Roark is deeply saddened.
Car jackers/thieves == Horse thieves
Shoot em til dead.
This is how you end petty street crime, one punk at a time. There aren’t that many of them, they just repeat often.
Carjackings, robbery of persons, robbery of business, etc. would disappear, if more of them were “cured”.
Woke up on the wrong side of the truck bed this morning bump.
The partner should have immediately arrested him or shot him
I knew a cop once. Total idiot. He fired a 12 gauge inside the police car. He told me he couldn’t hear a thing for two days after.
He was probably drunk. That’s the kind of guy he was.
That would also explain the ar-15😂🤣😂🤣
At the very least, he denied her access to it.
No one here is going to point out that according to the title, the shooter was asleep the whole time?
Are we getting used to horrible grammar and crappy journalism?
The gun, the gun! The sleeping guy is just as surprised as the thief. Ban those dangerous guns!
You win some and you lose some.
Why do you say that? This guy because of being a man not wanting a domestic violence case chose to sleep in his vehicle and cleaned some evil vermin from this planet. The guy is a real man, IMHO. I just hope he didn’t damage his hearing.
Did the perp have a name?
Sorry to hear that. I had 3 teenagers die in a car wreck in my front yard, two girls and an 18 year old boy. I still have dreams of the dead girls asking me to help them, except when I found them they were already gone.
Whatever happened to being married instead of shacking up? Seems like that’s 50 years ago, too. Destruction of the family has led to destruction of our civilization.
