Don’t state legislatures already have the right to determine how a state’s Electors are chosen? Baring a state law to the contrary and long-standing custom, are states even required to hold elections for Electors?
In the election of 1860, Electors for Lincoln weren’t even on the southern states’ ballots. Of course that didn’t work out all that well for them.

So if the red state legislatures ban the democratic candidate and the blue state legislatures ban the repulican candidate....which is what this all leads to, who wins? In a way we are just back to the electoral system but determined by state legislatures and governors I guess.....

Insurrection would require an attempt to run a new, unauthorized national government as was once done from Montgomery & Richmond.
Here in the South, states would let the blacks have an opportunity to vote after the white primary.
The blacks could vote for the Republican, who had as much chance as a snowball in a southern summer (or an Atlanta inferno), or they could vote for the white primary Democrat.
Those were the days when Amendment XV was taken at face value. Ever since 1943 its intent to not deprive a racial group of voting power has been the Supreme Court’s deciding factor.
Insurrection is going to bite them in the ass. The President is immune. The Congress, federal officers and state officials are not immune.
