Conservative Roman Catholics in Seville, Spain have deemed a poster of Jesus Christ, created to promote Easter week, offensive.
The poster depicts Christ half nude with a beard and long hair, his lower-half covered by a white cloth, in front of a saturated red backdrop. It was designed by Seville–based artist Salustiano Garcia.
Holy week, which includes Good Friday and Easter Sunday, honors the death and resurrection of Jesus. Seville is known for its huge festivities around the occasion.

The leader of Spain’s ruling socialist party and former mayor of Seville Juan Espadas fought for the artwork, arguing that it combined both “tradition and modernity”.
The Archbishop of Seville likewise defended the work as an act of artistic freedom.
Many, however, decried the purported sexuality of the poster.
“It’s absolutely shameful and an aberration,” wrote the conservative Catholic IPSE, adding that the portrayal was “effeminate” and “camp”, demanding a public apology from the artist.
The leader of the far-right Vox party Javier Navarro added that the poster “sought to provoke” with little effort to encourage Holy Week participation.
The artist told right-leaning ABC newspaper, however, that the inspiration came from his son.
“To see sexuality in my image of Christ, you must be mad,” Garcia said, claiming there wasn’t anything in his painting that “has not already been represented in artworks dating back hundreds of years”.
The poster’s fate remains unclear, though a petition on change.org seeking to repeal the poster by the Seville’s city hall received more than 12,000 signatures in three days.
My version of Jesus is a cross between Archie Bunker, and General George S. Patton.
The artist is a poofter. Has to be.
Mine is a version of Charles Bronson.
That works too.
Yeah. Jesus looks pretty macho next to him.
It’s gay video game playing Jesus. IRL Jesus was likely a stone mason...would have been rough and gruff and strong. Very blue collar.
Lol!
Works for me.
He was a carpenter, which meant He had to have bene in pretty good shape.
Driving out the money changers in the Temple with a whip kind of reinforces that idea.
Stone mason? A carpenter’s son?
But others portray him as black. Some black activists claim there has been a white cultural appropriation of his true nature.
And we need not go into the blasphemous Da Vinci Code novel and movie.
Chuck Norris.
Disrespectful and gross.
Jesus had short hair, as did all Jews at the time.
His mom was Jewish but maybe he took after His Dad.
/as long as He lets me in I do not care
Thank you.
I wanted to say that and that’s one reason I reject the Shroud of Turin(sp?)
It shows an image with long, shoulder length hair.☹️
A word study of the greek is interesting. He's never called the equivelent of a wood worker. The word translated as "carpenter" is tecktone and it could be applied to any craftsman who produces something or works with something. Tekton.
In the Septuagent this distinction is made clearer.
2 Samuel 5:11 Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters and masons. And they built David a house. NKJV
So in the New King James in English it says he sent “carpenters and masons”. But in the greek in the Septuagint the word translated carpenter is “tekton xulonit or wood craftsmen. And “masons” is tekton lithos or stone craftsmen.
The point is that “tekton” or fabricator, has to be modified with what is fabricated to get a sure answer as to what KIND of craftsmen we’re referring to. In this case, in 2 Samuel, this information is supplied so we can know for sure that these two types of craftsmen are carpenters and masons.
The idea that Jesus was a tekton of wood is from tradition based on post biblical beliefs. Primarily from "Dialogue wit Tryphos" by Justin Martyr who wrote:
"And when Jesus came to the Jordan, He was considered to be the son of Joseph the carpenter; and He appeared without comeliness, as the Scriptures declared; and He was deemed a carpenter (for He was in the habit of working as a carpenter when among men, making ploughs and yokes; by which He taught the symbols of righteousness and an active life);"
Also in the document "The Infancy Gospel of Thomas" this is written:
"Infancy Gospel of Thomas (written roughly the same time (155-170 ad)
13 Now Jesus' father was a carpenter, making ploughs and yokes at that time. He received an order from a rich man to make a bed for him. (2)When one board of what is called the crossbeam turned out to be shorter than the other, and Joseph didn't know what to do, the child Jesus said to his father, "Put the two boards down and line them up at one end. (3)Joseph did as the child told him. Jesus stood at the other end and grabbed hold of the shorter board, and, by stretching it, made it the same length as the other. (4)His father Joseph looked on and marveled, and he hugged and kissed the child, saying, "How fortunate I am that God has given this child to me.""
There's no biblical evidence of any of this remember. The bible tells us he was a craftsman but not what kind.
In addition a tekton of wood would have been a rare occupation. There's not too many trees in that area. HOWEVER a tekton of stone would be a common trade. Herod was building all kinds of stone edifices and a stone mason would be gainfully employed.
Keep also in mind all the "stone" and rock references Jesus made.
Luk 6:46 "But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say? Luk 6:47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: Luk 6:48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock G4073). And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.(G4073)
Rom 9:33 As it is written: "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STUMBLING STONE AND ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND WHOEVER BELIEVES ON HIM WILL NOT BE PUT TO SHAME."
1Pe 2:3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 1Pe 2:4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 1Pe 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
A stone mason building up a spiritual temple with living stones makes all kinds of sense.
“Disrespectful and gross.”
Well said. I was looking for the words.
