A little visit to Google and some spreadsheet work shows that these 26 States generate 40% of the US GDP (as of 2022) and have 244 Electoral Votes.

Not to mention production of food, oil, coal, gas and other basics.

Add in the gap States (KS, KY, NC), and it’s up to 46% of the US GDP (2022) and 274 EV.

And:
Transportation: It’s a thing. One would be amazed at the amount of stuff that goes by rail, barge and truck. Interesting map exercise.
