Over the past two years, Genuine Campbell was shocked at how rent for her two-bedroom apartment in Philadelphia just kept going up — from $1,300 a month to $1,600. She's a single mom of four, and right as her rent was rising, her hours as a hotel valet were getting cut.
Add in utility costs plus inflation, and every month brought a wrenching decision.
"Do you want to pay the bills and then give half the rent, or do you want to try to do the whole rent and then be back on bills?" she says.
Campbell says the area isn't even safe enough for her kids to play outside, but the rents are still way out of line with what she can make. "You have to work in, like, maybe a hospital or [as a] police officer ... just to keep up with the rent," she says.

If you work for the government, they at least will pay you enough to live in a commie block.
This “affordable housing” BS has got 50% of idiot Americans thinking that life is so unfair and that sellers and landlords need to stop “gouging” the market. Pathetic. This and minimum wage increases helps to keep these dopes on the reservation.
That’s also why they are turning the screws on landlords, in the hopes they just give up, and let government become the sole landlord.
The new wage slaves- YOU WILL OWN NOTHING AND YOU’ll BE HAPPY!
Endless hordes of immigrants need some place to stay and a guaranteed check from Uncle Sam is more reliable than a private citizen paying
Deep State eliminating the private sector competition.
Blackrock and other like-minded companies are buying up any house they can get their hands on. Will then sell to Fed’s to be given to the homeless etc.
There are plenty of cheap empty beds south of the US border and abroad. More than 30 million at last count. Thanks Myorkas.

So more illegals then? Yeah, that’s the ticket.

What could possibly go wrong?
Lol.
“This “affordable housing” BS “??
Bought a house 15 years ago for 55K
now worth 400K
Another 10 years ago for 75K
now worth 525K
Wages have not kept up on that scale.
Local market?
Median income 63K
Median House? 525K
That is unaffordable for most folks.
The democrat solution is to import another 50 million illegals from all around the world, and then establish shantytowns as the new normal.
And making under 30k/year. What does she want, a 3-4 bedroom house? I'm amazed what people think they deserve, where is the husband?
Another reason, I'm not as pro-life as I used to be.
The daddy or daddies have probably been on the lam for years—perhaps in prison for a variety of crimes.
She gets to pay the stupid tax.
The kids get the bad luck tax.
Yep, I feel bad for the kids. But then again, so many kids have inferior parents. And my belief is that good (2) parenting can be critical.
I believe this is the first time I’ve seen the first name of GENUINE . . .

You have to be careful about telling the truth here. So many Boomers are going to tell you back in my day you just had to work hard blah blah blah. Yeah back in your day, the average rent was about 3 to 4 days wages. Local to me in a very poor choice of suburb (chicago metro) from my point of view to live in, starter homes are renting for $2,000 or higher.
Something is really broken in regards to real estate costs. Like you said, the prices have been rising way faster than wages over time. Perhaps the costs are rising because many are viewing single family homes as an investment vehicle. But that sort of analysis is over my head to be honest.
Sorry snowflakes about the high cost of rent.
But, snowflakes, who did you vote for in 2020? Maybe Biden?
It’s too bad that your President Biden has let 10 million people invade the USA and that those invaders are living in rental homes and the rent is being paid by your President Biden.
