CHICAGO -- Mayor Brandon Johnson is pushing a plan that would end natural gas hookups in new buildings and homes as the city aims to phase out fossil fuels that intensify the climate crisis, but the idea is already drawing resistance from some unions.
Johnson plans to introduce a "clean" buildings ordinance Wednesday that would end new gas hookups for cooking, heating and hot-water tanks and require electric power instead.
The idea has been kicked around Chicago in recent years. In October 2022, City Hall announced that outside advisers, including advocacy organizations, had recommended a ban as part of a larger climate-fighting plan. Those recommendations inspired the buildings ordinance, which was not publicly available as of Monday.
The law would set an indoor emissions standard that eliminates use of fossil fuels in new construction and building additions of more than 10,000 square feet. It would likely go into effect one year after it's passed by the City Council.
Gas would be replaced by all-electric systems.
"It's a no brainer for anyone building new construction today," said John Gay, president of architecture firm JAQ Corp.

Make the ruling immediate.
Gas exists in nature. Electricity has to be made. They just don’t get it.
I love my gas heater dryer stove hot water heater and they blow and go especially in the winter time
unions and their members in the north typically vote for democrats. maybe Johnson wants to change that.
Pea brain.
Immediate and retroactive. If you’re serious, then get serious!!
This is absolute madness. Does he think that he can get up in front of rabid climate leftists and say stuff like this and that his constituents who’d either be freezing from mass blackouts with this or completely unable to pay HUGE electric bills won’t notice. Are they that stupid?
This is a great idea.
He should cut off all means of heating every living space in Chicago. Except of course his own.
Now why would this guy care about that?
Oh yeah, he is paid to care about that.
electricity doesn’t always have to be made. sometimes it just falls from the sky. democrats should be thankful it isn’t selectively.
Just another way to control the populace, make no mistake. What does this anal orifice have against gas? Because it’s cheaper? Because it helps keep us energy independent? Because his family doesn’t own enough gas stock?
Might not be bad idea, Illinois would be a good state if it weren’t for Chicago.
Is it time to panic?!!
Remember when Rush use to tell us: “I’ll tell you when to panic.”
Good luck on that homeowners insurance.
I always turn to architectural firms for advice on how to build a reliable, economical power supply and how to deliver that power reliably and economically to buildings. I'm glad Mr. Gay had a chance to show his power engineering bona fides. Thank you for your power engineering wisdom, Mr. Gay.
Sounds pretty Gay to me...
“It’s a no brainer”
A favorite of progressives when they’re scamming you.
