‘A total failure to launch’: Why Ron DeSantis was doomed from the start
NBC ^ | Jan. 21, 2024 | Matt Dixon

Iowa was supposed to be make-or-break for Ron DeSantis.

The Florida governor essentially moved his campaign there late last year, and Never Back Down, his allied super PAC, spent tens of millions of dollars knocking on doors in the state.

“We’re going to win Iowa,” DeSantis declared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Dec. 2.

But in the week before the all-important caucuses, Scott Wagner, the recently installed head of the super PAC, was doing something that aides found puzzling: He was literally doing a puzzle.

In the headquarters of Never Back Down in West Des Moines, Iowa, Wagner was, according to some of his staff, spending a significant amount of time in the precious final few days constructing a peaceful 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle of a landscape.

In a photo taken on Jan. 9, shared with NBC News by a Never Back Down team member, others in the room were hunched over their laptops.

“Staffers are putting their dedication and devotion to electing Gov. DeSantis and they come in and the CEO, the chairman of the organization, is sitting there working on a puzzle for hours,” said a Never Back Down staffer who was there.

Another Never Back Down staffer also said Wagner worked on it for “hours” in the week before Iowa.

The fact that one of the top people in charge of securing a win for DeSantis in Iowa was spending time on something unrelated to the caucuses was emblematic of the mismanagement and wasted efforts that many of DeSantis’ own supporters say have plagued the campaign from the very beginning.

Two points:

—The SuperPac was most of DeSantis spending—it counts—it is real money he could have used elsewhere. The total is over $50 M.
—Great question on the over the air spending. I think the Federal Election Commission and the Justice Department are going to be pawing over the DeSantis campaign and SuperPac files. It is a real mess.

Starting with the lie that he didn’t want to run for president was the first mistake.

Back when Trump coined the term DeSanctimonious, everyone was wondering why he would attack DeSantis. It was because the big money was already flowing to Ron. Way more than a governor's race would need. Trump knew what that meant.

Being sneaky and screwing your FL constituency was not a good way to start.

Ron DeSantis was everything I would have expected from an Ivy League educated lawyer and a career politician.

Claudine Gay would have stood a better chance of being elected President than that guy.

"DeSantis and his insider donors deciding to go up against the most popular, loved and respected president in American history was probably the worst political decision ever made by anyone."

Unless Meaty had gone out and shown some class, but maybe his handlers knew 2028 goes to Vice-President Youngkin vs Gruesome, so he was told "knives out", which suited Madame Dufarge all too well.

So that set the tone of the campaign, and promptly tripled his Unfavorables from April-August 2023 where they were on a par with Trump's, but with zero net increase in Favorables. He was beaten then and there.

I just recently read that a winnable FL Congressional seat was lost to the DNC. The Congressional majority is almost gone. DeSantis didn’t bother to support the candidate.

"“Would that have been different had he been the first one in?” Nope. Trump was the last to enter in 2016, didn’t do the 15 Dwarfs any good."

In 2015, Trump officially declared his candidacy for President of the United States almost in the middle.

Cruz, March 23; Rand, April 7; Foam Boy, April (lucky) 13; Dr. Carson and Cardboard Fiorina, May 4; Huckabee, May 5; Santorum, May 27; Pataki, May 28; Linda Graham, June 1; Rick Perry, June 4; ¡Yeb!, June 15.

President Trump declared June 16.

Jindal, June 24; Krispy Kreme, June 30; Scott Walker, July 13; Mailman Jr Kasich, July 21; Jim Gilmore, July 30.

You have to differentiate, point out your competitors weaknesses and your strengths or reasons you’re better than your competitor. The field just joined Trump in bashing the field without including Trump.

I know Trump’s followers are “tired” of hearing his shortcomings, but he does have them. And they can be exploited. If one is not open to those shortcomings and how someone else can do better, then that’s a pretty sad state of affairs.

Officially - but unofficially, Trump wasn’t even in the mix until just before formally announcing. The 15 Dwarfs spent YEARS trying to get their names out before officially announcing.

“You have to differentiate, point out your competitors weaknesses and your strengths or reasons you’re better than your competitor.”

DeSantis tried that - didn’t work out too well for him.

Perhaps he should have tried another tack, no?

Legally, his campaign is not supposed to coordinate with the superPACs at all, so he’d be in trouble if he claimed their spending as his.

Plus, again, those numbers are for the other early states as well, and indeed he seems not to have got traction or spent, to any really degree, in NH.

“DeSantis didn’t understand that his support base was primarily also Trump’s support base. The moment he declared for president against Trump most of his support evaporated.”

Bears repeating.

The whole “coordination” thing is a real mess for DeSantis.

Problems include:

—Employee A leaves SuperPac and then joins campaign
—Employee B leaves campaign and then joins Superpac

or this one:

—Superpac hires Vendor A
—A couple of days later Campaign hires Vendor A

or this one:

—Big mouth Superpac spokesperson tells the media “New Hampshire is where campaigns go to day (actually happened)
—Big mouth Campaign tells the media Superpac is out of line
—Then Superpac starts spending money in New Hampshire

This stuff went on and on and on...total mess.

The Justice Department could probably write a thousand page legal brief indicting these clowns if they want to....

The correct quote was “New Hampshire is where campaigns go to die”.

“When did he do that. He went after Nikki. She wasn’t blocking his path.”

Nimroda was an afterthought - he tried to take on THE KING, and it was hopeless, and embarrassing.
