Chicago-area Tesla charging stations lined with dead cars in freezing cold: 'A bunch of dead robots out here'

Desperate Tesla owners in and around Chicago were seen trying to charge their vehicles with no luck amid frigid temperatures that have gripped the Midwest.

Charging stations have essentially turned into car graveyards in recent days as temperatures have dropped to the negative double digits, Fox Chicago reported.

"Nothing. No juice. Still on zero percent," Tyler Beard, who had been trying to recharge his Tesla at an Oak Brook, Illinois Tesla supercharging station since Sunday afternoon, told the news outlet. "And this is like three hours being out here after being out here three hours yesterday."

Too bad all of the golf courses in the Chicago area can’t charge all of the EV golf carts. There is not a lot of golfing going on around here right now.

That’s a pretty good idea, you can get a 40KW Generator for $20K New and under 10K used, $200 cash for an hour of charging and you are out of the cold.

I think an EV might be a nice third car, but that’s about it.

When you charge your EV, you stand out in the cold. MUCH longer than to fill a gas tank.

EVs are a disaster.

I’d like to know if the presidential limosine fleet uses gas/diesel powered cars or EVs while their ruling elite riders give us the finger and watch us freeze in the dark.

Also, the power backup generators in the White House. Do they run on batteries powered by solar panels or by oil/propane?

To avoid being called hypocrites, they need to immediately switch to electric.

“It’s hard to believe that in the very near future, fossil fuel cars will not be permitted to be sold at least according to the powers that be.”

at least hopefully I will have a country place and a Red Barchetta

My uncle has a country place
No one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the “Motor Law”

And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the turbine freight
To far outside the wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits

Jump to the ground
As the turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind

As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn

My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For 50 odd years

To keep it as new has been his dearest dream
I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car

A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time

We fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar

Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime

Wind in my hair
Shifting and drifting

Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge
Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air

Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide

I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race

Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope

I’ve got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm

To dream with my uncle at the fireside

Apparently, the batteries do not accept a charge when the temperature drops to a certain number.

All the headlines say Tesla, but it sure looks like a lot of other brands as well that I have seen.

Anyone who even thinks about buying and EV ought to pee on an electric fence first as they probably need shock therapy.

All the headlines say Tesla, but it sure looks like a lot of other brands as well that I have seen.

Older EV's don't have battery preconditioning (heating the battery before charging it so that the charging is done faster). It may be unfair to Tesla since they mass produced EV's before EV's made in the past year or two had battery preconditioning. Thus, they're taking the heat (pardon the pun) for having EV's out there before preconditioning became a thing.

Even with that understanding, I wouldn't get an EV if I lived up north. My wife and I like our EV and do most of our driving in it (26K miles last year, 16K of those charged at home). Even in the south there's an every now and then situation where the ICE pickup is better for that day's driving (I wouldn't think about an EV pickup because they have poor range when carrying a load, plus there might be a road trip we want to take in an area with few charging options). Nor would I get an EV if I couldn't set up a charger at home (i.e. if I lived in an apartment, or if I lived in a house but had to park on the street). Nor should someone get an EV if he doesn't drive enough miles for the gas savings to be worth the extra cost of an EV. Nor should he get an EV unless he's married and needs two cars anyway (having one EV and one ICE car gives my wife and me the best of both worlds to choose from).

If someone lives in that kind of situation like I do, an EV can be a practical option. Ironically, most leftists who love EV's don't (single, live in urban areas, don't drive much anyway, live in the cold north, etc.)

Part of the problem is that the batteries are so cold and flat that they do not ACCEPT a charge.

A diesel generator would not change that.
