USN and Royal Navy on Defence as Houthis Launch Largest Attack on Red Sea Shipping Yet
Breitbart ^ | 10 Jan 2024 | OLIVER JJ LANE

U.S. and British warships and aircraft shot down “the largest attack from the Iranian-backed Houthis in the Red Sea to date” overnight, taking down every drone, cruise missile, and ballistic missile, preventing damage to warships and merchant shipping.

Eighteen ‘suicide attack’ drones, two anti-ship cruise missiles, and one anti-ship ballistic missile were launched by Iran-backed Shiite Houthi fighters in Yemen towards the Red Sea overnight on the 9th of January, part of an ongoing effort to attack the economy of Western nations by destroying merchant ships and closing the crucial Red Sea route to trade.

The 21 drones and missiles shot down by the United States Navy (USN) and Royal Navy (RN) on Tuesday night is greater than the 19 Operation Prosperity Guardian has otherwise shot down in the entire operation to date, according to numbers stated by a USN Admiral last week.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the attempted strike was a “complex attack of Iranian designed one-way attack [drones]” and missiles launched towards “international shipping lanes where dozens of merchant vessels were transiting”. The aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and F-18s from its airwing, and the destroyers USS Gravely, USS Laboon, USS Mason, and HMS Diamond were involved in the defensive effort.

In the case of Taiwan it would take weeks to get munitions loaded onto ships and sent there even if we had them. Any invasion will be decided before that can happen. I’m afraid an amphibious invasion of Taiwan is come as you are.

I think it’s well past the time to teach respect. Too bad our battleships where all turned into museums. Those big guns could really convey displeasure.

Unbelievable. Statistically, sooner or later, one of these will get through. US sailors will die and we haven't done jack to eliminate the source.

Ever heard of counter-battery fire??

How can’t we, within minutes, not identify launch points in Yemen and take them out?

We can locate the launch points. It is the rules of engagement that are the problem, and these emanate from the White House.

I keep hearing that there are serious doubts as to whether China has the sea-lift capability to mount a credible amphibious invasion over the straits. I would think that they would know this well themselves and that is why they are trying so hard to influence upcoming elections in Taiwan? all these years of hand wringing over Taiwan’s independence from the Commie Chinese and there’s a serious risk China could reclaim Taiwan politically, without a shot fired?
Or am I misreading the tea leaves? wouldn’t be the first time.

They WANT this to happen, gives them more reason to escalate.

There are some good analyses on YouTube about China’s military capability. The PLA is far worse than they want us to believe.

Also our own MIC has a history of exaggerating Russian and Chinese gear and capabilities. Got to keep that spending high.

Chinese gear is inferior. Their carriers are jokes. The catapults on that new one are half as powerful as ours. Their jet engines have on the order of 1/4 the lifespan of NATO’s. Etc etc.

China is definitely dangerous. But an invasion of Taiwan is by no means assured. Especially if Japan and India jump in. Japan certainly would. India wouldn’t want China to succeed.

India is very critical here. It can easily shut off most of China’s oil.

Xi is evil but not completely stupid. A failed invasion of Taiwan could bring the CCP down. Their public is already in turmoil. Probably a billion of the Chinese live at poverty level. He would have to be really desperate to attack Taiwan. China could not survive the sort of sanctions that Russia has managed to endure. Russia has its own oil resources. China doesn’t.

In the event of an ill-advised attempt at an amphibious invasion of Taiwan, would the Chinese Three Gorges dam be destroyed utterly? Would their two oil pipelines overland from Russia be severed in multiple spots? We all have weak spots to be exploited during conflict.

Yes, Bombay throwing in with Japan against the Chi Coms would boomerang back on Xi in unpredictable ways. I think it would certainly foil their ability to succeed and it well might bring down the whole communist regime there. How could that be worth the risk to them?

The three gorges dam is having problems on its own. Chinese concrete is crap. Corruption in China is rampant. You can find videos of Chinese buildings collapsing or someone breaking the rebar with their hands. If there even is rebar in it. 20 year old Chinese concrete buildings crumbling away. The Chinese produce crap. All command and control economies do.

I have heard that it will cause flooding downstream when it fails, especially if all at once. Saw satellite photos in time lapse a while back that appeared to show some structural buckling. Jeepers.

I don’t know if this is common knowledge, but I looked only a bit into it and don’t know what’s the right thing to do.

That’s why: Yemen is roughly as big as Texas and has about the same amount of people. Iranian flying bomb drone fits on a shelf of a pick up truck. “SCUD hunting” from the first Gulf War shows that at least a short while ago finding even much larger targets was very hard and now the target is only the size of a pick up truck.
