Harvard president’s resignation highlights new conservative weapon against colleges: plagiarism

WASHINGTON (AP) — The downfall of Harvard’s president has elevated the threat of unearthing plagiarism, a cardinal sin in academia, as a possible new weapon in conservative attacks on higher education.

Claudine Gay’s resignation Tuesday followed weeks of mounting accusations that she lifted language from other scholars in her doctoral dissertation and journal articles. The allegations surfaced amid backlash over her congressional testimony about antisemitism on campus.

The plagiarism allegations came not from her academic peers but her political foes, led by conservatives who sought to oust Gay and put her career under intense scrutiny in hopes of finding a fatal flaw. Her detractors charged that Gay — who has a Ph.D. in government, was a professor at Harvard and Stanford and headed Harvard’s largest division before being promoted — got the top job in large part because she is a Black woman.

When I was in College- It was clearly understood that plagiarism would get you a zero on the paper or failed the class.

Uncovering something dishonorable someone has done in the past is a tactic of all politicians against their opponents.

The fact that people on the left apparently lie and plagiarize so much more than those on the right that revelations of plagiarism can be used as a political weapon by the right against the left just shows that leftists are plagiarists.

Biden is also a plagiarist. When will he resign?

it isn’t a weapon unless a high ranking plagerist not only gets fired but also loses any and every position they’ve ever had due to cheating AND forced to pay back everyone else who could or would have had a chance to move up. but she still has a job so...

...intense scrutiny in hopes of finding a fatal flaw.

Sounds like what the Left does to its enemies (us).

Wasn’t he disqualified to run as president or something like that years ago for being caught as a plagiarist?

Are two writers from AP okay with plagiarism ? Seems like a weird stance. I wait, they are protected by copyright … different rules.

What's the Ape Pee's argument here? That plagiarism is okay if you're black?

I remember a 11th grade English class (1975) where writing a paper was explained detail, and how you cited direct quotes. We must have spent two hours over a week...about the correct way of producing legit documents. Doubt if they still do that today.

“When I was in College- It was clearly understood that plagiarism would get you a zero on the paper or failed the class.”

There were a couple of things attached to that statement my professors gave us:

1. Cut and paste plagiarism
2. References not cited

It was perfectly fine to cite for research papers, AND unquoted but reworded statements were also cited to CYA.

Doctoral thesis writing was uncharted territory for me.

I often thought that if doctrinal work was supposedly original, that means nobody else has ever come up with that particular doctrinal work. In my mind that would be almost impossible at this day and age.

That is from a students perspective.

From the perspective of a professional academic is, or was it seems, the unforgivable sin.

It speaks to integrity and competence - both things that DEI are trying to destroy. DEI is built upon lies, fraud and phony scholarship to manufacture a false, synthetic reality on campus that cannot hold up to serious scrutiny in the real world.

It exists solely because it has the imprimatur of the “Elite Universities” .

In the past you generally assumed that if it came from from Harvard it must be true (unless of course you were like William Buckley Jr and had actually went to Harvard)

This false history and reality that these losers have manufactured on campus generally stays on campus so the general public has no idea of the bogus crap that was passing for genuine scholarship and was then being taught to their kids.

The scam is being exposed and the general public is catching on to the garbage that is being taught at our self proclaimed "elite" schools.

These are supposedly the most brilliant people among us (we’re told this by those that drool over such people) and yet they can’t write paragraphs that come from their own mind.

I’m reminded of Bill Buckley’s quote that he’d rather be governed by the first two hundred names in the Boston phone book than all the faculty at Harvard.

She has seriously damaged Harvard brand. That she is still there albeit in a lower position will continue to damage the schools battered reputation. She needs to be fired.
