”THE ENVELOPE, PLEASE!”

THE ACADEMY AWARDS FOR THE BEST ORIGINAL SONG: THE 2010s

Obama. Trump. COVID. Gay marriage. Transgenderism.

***

2010 – Toy Story 3: “We Belong Together,” by Randy Newman

This was the third entry in the Pixar and Disney collaboration, and all three entries were wonderful.

Randy Newman: “We Belong Together”

***

2011 – The Muppets: “Man or Muppet,” by Bret McKenzie

Jim Henson’s death did not end the Muppets’ reign. They continued to make money, this time for Disney.

Jason Segel, Peter Linz, Bill Barretta & Jim Parsons: “Man or Muppet”

***

2012 – Skyfall: “Skyfall,” by Adele & Paul Epworth

Another James Bond flick. Over the years I get them all confused.

Adele: “Skyfall”

***

2013 – Frozen: “Let It Go,” by Kirsten Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez

Hans Christian Andersen by way of Disney, and it made billions for the studio.

Demi Lovato: “Let It Go”

***

2014 – Selma: “Glory,” by Common, John Legend & Rhymefest

A great film about a tumultuous period of American history, even with its occasional historical inaccuracies.

Common & John Legend: “Glory”

***

2015 – Spectre: “Writing’s on the Wall,” by Jimmy Napes & Sam Smith

Yet another James Bond flick.

Sam Smith: “Writing’s on the Wall”

***

2016 – La La Land: “City of Stars,” by Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasak & Justin Paul

For once, a great Hollywood musical, and it addresses the failure of hopes and dreams in Tinseltown. I had badly underestimated Ryan Gosling’s talent. He’s very good at what he does.

Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone: “City of Stars”

***

2017 – Coco: “Remember Me,” by Kirsten Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez

This all-Latino effort from Pixar and Disney was a massive success, exploring Mexico’s interesting admixture of Catholicism and the ancient Aztec faith.

Gael Garcia Bernal: “Remember Me”

***

2018 – A Star is Born: “Shallow,” by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando & Andrew Wyatt

This old chestnut never dies but comes back again and again with every new generation. Once again, it’s about country music with a mixture of genres. There is something musically for everybody.

Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper: “Shallow”

***

2019 – Rocketman: “Love Me Again,” by Elton John & Bernie Taupin

This is a musical biopic of Elton John. Once again he is united with his old lyricist for this effort. This was the first film from a major studio to feature an explicit male gay sex scene – which is why I’m glad I never saw the movie.

Elton John & Taron Egerton: “Love Me Again”
