A more accurate translation of 'tekton' is 'craftsman' or 'builder'. That makes more sense in a region where trees were rare.

Mary and Joseph were travelling to Bethlehem, where Josephs family was traditionally from. They were doing so at the behest of Romans, who demanded they return for a census, and to pay taxes. They most assuredly had a home somewhere, else they would not be travelling while she was with child.
Jesus was not homeless. They had a home but by government decree, they had to go to Joseph’s ancestral home.

It’s amazing how people will believe people that have never cracked the Bible much less studied it, tell others what it says. This “priest” falls into that category. The Old Testament plainly states the entire history of the land and the story of Mary and Joseph is plainly stated if you just open the Bible and read it. It’s not hard to understand.
They were not really homeless. Home was Nazareth. Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem for the Census. Hard to say how long they stayed before heading to Egypt where they were homeless. Some say about a year.
I read a good article (non-biblical) that speculated that the gifts of the Magi were for when they fled to Egypt.
Every so often I will look up international nativity scenes and look at all the different depictions of Christ according to the people who made the scenes, and just as the Europeans depicted Him as European-looking (French in France, Portuguese in Portugal, etc), so do Christians all over the world. They love Him and His family and take them all in.
