Texas has enacted a law that will make border crossings illegal and punishable with jail time, one of the toughest immigration laws passed by any US state in modern times.
Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, said it would "stop the tidal wave of illegal entry into Texas".
Immigration advocates have said the law will lead to racial profiling.
It comes amid rising illegal migration and public concern over US President Joe Biden's handling of the border.
The new Texas measure is so controversial, in part, because US courts have previously ruled that only the federal government can enforce immigration laws.
Crossing the border illegally is already a federal crime, but violations are currently handled as civil cases by the immigration court system.
SB4, which is due to come into effect in March, passed both houses of Texas' Republican-led legislature in November.
In practice, the law allows local and state police officers to stop and arrest anyone suspected of having crossed the border illegally, except in schools and hospitals.
Punishments range from misdemeanours to felonies that can lead to jail time or fines of up to $2,000 (£1,580).

Hopefully via catapult.
Little late ,don’t you think?
unfortunately this will be struck down as all previous attempts of states to try to do something. The courts have ruled over and over that only the federal government has authority over the border.
Tent cities in the river
the Texas legislature was to busy trying to remove Ken Paxton to deal with real issues. Dade Phelan needs to be arrested.
so illegal drugs crossing the US border from Mexico and sold on Texas streets can only be addressed by the Feds? I could list more examples but I think most understand the concept.
“The courts”
Then we will
- Change the judges
- Abolish those courts (only the SCOTUS is Constitutional)
- Either Amend the Constitution or simply clarify it by Congress’ authority to do so
“illegal immigrants” or criminal invaders. Who’s in your house? /s
Texas should have sued to force the federal government to stop the invasion.
Texas has another option available to it: Secede from the United States of Democrats. She would be quickly followed my many other states sick of what the Democrats have done to the nation.
The pope will excommunicate Texas over this.
Very late and one thing they can do legally is put on fancy uniforms and patrol the border. The illegals won’t know who they are but will be intimidated not to enter.
2nd thought, California has higher emissions requirements then the Federal Government and that’s ok. So Texas just has higher immigration requirements than the Federal Government. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
‘Bout time!
Many are coming for construction jobs.
Do not buy a new house until the invasion is stopped.
Do not sell a house until the invasion is stopped.

The foregoing link will take you to an article summarizing 8 cases (starting in 1918) where Supreme Court rulings have been overturned by Congress. Out of 25,500 decisions handed down by the court since 1789, only 146 were reversed by the court.
The state can’t deport anyone.
However, I’d start sending busload to the governors mansion in Arizona and to Maricopa Cty government buildings and courthouse.
Below, please note an excerpt from an article on Correcting the Supreme Court.........historically. Bottom line is that Supreme Court Rulings STAND because Congress allows them to STAND.

But a joint review of dozens of Supreme Court cases by The Intercept and the American Prospect finds dozens of statutory rulings similar to Ledbetter’s that Congress could overturn simply by tweaking the statute to remove whatever ambiguity the court claimed to find in its text. Even where the court has ruled on constitutional grounds, there is often much room left to legislate the boundaries, just as conservatives have done in relation to Roe v. Wade and abortion restrictions. From salvaging the Voting Rights Act gutted by Shelby County v. Holder in 2013 to protecting workers’ free speech rights on the job or safeguarding reproductive rights, the list of cases awaiting a creative Congress runs long.
One would think that a state has the right to protect its own borders.
