Biden administration alarmed by dozens of Israeli military strikes against US-backed Lebanese army: report
NY Post ^ | Dec. 16, 2023 | Victor Nava

The Biden administration has told Israel that attacks intentionally or inadvertently against Lebanon’s armed forces are “unacceptable” over fears that the conflict in the Middle East could expand, according to a report.

US officials believe that since Oct. 7 at least 34 Israeli strikes have hit areas where members of the Lebanese Armed Forces were present, resulting in eight injuries and one death, CNN reported Friday.

...

“The United States is proud of its partnership with the LAF, an essential institution, not only to the stability and security of Lebanon, but of the entire region,” the spokesperson said.

Maybe Biden should ask Hezbollah to leave. That, or get out of Israel’s way.

Lebanese Armed Forces are Christian and have amped up tension with Hezbollah right now

Yet dispensationalists here are either ignorant or stupid in their zeal

Puts you guys in a pickle

Put me down as one who supports Israel not attacking Christian forces who oppose Iran backed militias in Lebanon

And destroying Hamas

See that wasn’t so hard was it

DOState report: The LAF historically served as a pillar of stability in a country facing extraordinary challenges, including the presence of the terrorist group Hizballah. The U.S.-LAF partnership builds the LAF’s capacity as the sole legitimate defender of Lebanon’s sovereignty. Since 2006, U.S. investments of more than $3 billion to the LAF enabled the Lebanese military to be a stabilizing force against regional threats.
And to that I say, hah! Some stability!

Don’t let Hezbollah fire rockets from inside your compound and this won’t happen.

The way this is written it sounds like there is some sleight of hand going on with the administration message.

Is Israel targeting LAF, or more likely, is Israel aiming not at LAF but at Hezbollah targets in areas where LAF is either fighting Hezbollah or possibly getting in the way of Israel hitting Hezbollah?

‘LAF set to receive Iranian weaponry’ (Lebanon)
Jerusalem Post ^ | 9/2/09 | staff

The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) has accepted an offer by Iran to provide it with weapons produced by the Iranian defense industries, a newspaper in Lebanon reported on Wednesday. According to Al-Akhbar, the proposal was sent from the Iranian Embassy in Beirut.

In their response, LAF officers said the army was in need of anti-aircraft weaponry. Israeli officials have expressed concern that the existence of such weapons in Lebanon, whether in the hands of Hizbullah or the army, would constitute a change in the strategic balance between Israel and Lebanon.

Hmmmm......

‘Hizbullah training Lebanese Armed Forces’

Lebanese defense officials believe there is a secret pact between Hizbullah and top officers in the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), the Kuwaiti paper Asiyassa reported on Monday.

According to the account, a LAF battalion will operate within the Hizbullah framework and have independence and access to the group’s arsenal.

The paper said Israel gave the United States and European governments which have UNIFIL contingencies (France, Germany, Spain and Italy) information which proves Hizbullah was training dozens of LAF soldiers to prepare them to fight alongside Hizbullah guerrillas in case the IDF attacks Lebanon. Israel conveyed the information on July 1, according to the report.

The LAF battalion in Hizbullah, according to Asiyassa, will include 150 troops who will have access to areas south of the Litani River from where Hizbullah fighters are currently banned in the framework of UN Resolution 1701. Hizbullah reportedly trained the officers on the use of specific Iranian missiles with average- and long-distance ranges....

Israel’s American-made foes

It wasn’t a US Army sniper who killed IDF Lt.- Col. Dov Harari and seriously wounded Capt. Ezra Lakia on Tuesday. But the Lebanese Armed Forces sniper who shot them owes a great deal to the generous support the LAF has received from America.

For the past five years, the LAF has been the second largest recipient of US military assistance per capita after Israel. A State Department press release from late 2008 noted that between 2006 and 2008, the LAF received 10 million rounds of ammunition, Humvees, spare parts for attack helicopters, vehicles for its Internal Security Forces “and the same frontline weapons that US military troops are currently using, including assault rifles, automatic grenade launchers, advanced sniper systems, anti-tank weapons and the most modern urban warfare bunker weapons.”

Since 2006, the US has provided Lebanon some $500 million in military assistance. And there is no end in sight. After President Barack Obama’s meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri in June, the White House proclaimed Obama’s “determination to continue US efforts to support and strengthen Lebanese institutions such as the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Internal Security Forces.”

And indeed, in late June, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates informed Congress that the Pentagon intends to provide the LAF with 24 120mm mortars, 24 M2 .50 caliber machine guns, 1 million rounds of ammunition, and 24 humvees and trailers. The latest orders should be delivered by the end of 2011.

Ummmm - it says the attacks were “near where some Lebanese were present” -and that all them attacks resulted in 6 injuries and 1 death - if Israel were attacking Lebanese, you can be sure the tolls would be higher than that - it waits until late in the story to allow that just maybe it was all the Hezbollah troops that were the real targets - which begs the question - how invested is Lebanon against Hezbollah?

The Middle East is complicated. The largest surviving Christian communities in Syria and Lebanon hate the Israelis just as much as the Muslims.
