As a senior that took SS at 62 I have little sympathy for those that this is all they have for retirement. With a little planning they should be concerned with how to take their IRA income at age 72.

Unfortunately they bought in to the government will take care or me lie.

Maybe seniors should pretend to be Ukrainian or Mexicans fresh out of the river. 3.2 is an insult with this inflation.

An update, I have a lot of sympathy for those widows that believed their spouse that said they would be taken care of. I can name several cases where the husband promised the wife a good life if he passed and she got nothing.

At least 2 of these cases involve a military retiree that failed to sigh his wife for survivor benefits, what scumbags.

I just finished working with a lawyer showing my wife what she’ll be getting when I pass, she is very happy even though when I die there is a significant loss of income, but enough to keep her comfortable.

I just got notice my 2024 SS benefits will go up by $75/month. Wow! how am I going to spend that much extra cash??

I was not the best retirement saver, but at least I got out of debt before I retired, so our meager retirement income will go much further.

Our biggest expenses? Property taxes and medical. And those continue until we die.

can I assume you have a fat govt pension to provide for you generously?....and if you didn’t need to take the “govt’s” money then why did you take it at age 62?

S.S. was never designed or intended to be anyone’s sole source of income. Retiring and depending on it as such is just plain stupid. Unfortunately many do just that then complain that “S.S. should pay them enough to live on”

Illegal is getting more than people on Social Security. I don’t care what they saved or didn’t save. You had no idea what some of the situations of these people were. Not everybody has a good-paying job where they can set money aside.

here is an issue some are not considering...not everyone is equal in the area of ability. there is a good 20 percent of the population that because of intellect and other disabilities will always have survival minimum wage jobs and at the end 40+ years working will not have savings. I don’t have an answer for this problem other then look for those who are elderly in your community that are struggling and might not have family who will step in be the good neighbor if possible.

Well said. You need to take some responsibility for yourself. Social Security is a “safety net” and nothing more. It was never to support a lavish lifestyle.

If folks don’t like this COLA adjustment, wait until the funds run dry and they can only support 70 some percent of full payments. No one wants or dares to honestly discuss that “kick the financial can” problem until it can’t be ignored.

When gov gives $5000, plus a phone, plus housing them.. to every illegal who never paid taxes into the country.
When gov gives millions.. Billions.. To countries we have no obligation
...social security is giving money to seniors who did pay taxes all their lives and who gave and served.

(3.2 percent COLA increase for 2024)

It's pretty pathetic given Biden's Inflation which is far, far greater

here, from older neighbors, is how senior citizens feel, in case the article author has any doubts:

“A 3% raise when the actual experienced cost of living has gone up over 20 percent on most necessary or regular items and services, is a royal RIPOFF!
we paid into this Stinking (In-)Security for MANY years...
they promised us Cost of Living Adjustments, but
they give us Insulting Krap.”

There is another category to consider. A friend of mine was a master machinist for Westinghouse. He made good money, and put some away for retirement. Then when he was about 45, Westinghouse closed his plant. Production was moved overseas.

All of a sudden, there was no demand for his skills. He found another job, but it paid nothing like the old one - maybe a dollar over minimum wage. So my friend had to draw on his retirement money to keep the family afloat.

This guy now depends mainly on social security. Not his fault. He did everything right.

I they would just make robots pay into social security we could have a ully funded soc. sec. system out to infinity. By robot I mean any device which replaces human workers so atms and self checkout lines need to pay into social security for the workers they displace. Of course industrial robots if they replace ten humans then they pay into ss the amount those ten workers would pay.

My mother, bless her heart explained Social Security to me sixty years ago. She told me “social security was meant to give old people pocket money so when they were old and living with their children, they didn’t have to depend on them for everyday expenses. It was never meant to sustain a lifestyle of an employed person. My monthly S/S payment is 20% of what my paycheck was. I’m in good shape, I always saved 20% of my salary. The era of employer based retirement pensions ended with the 401K. Social Security by itself is pocket change.

If you’ve been working gigs as a 1099 Independent Contractor and you faithfully pay your taxes, you’re still left without a pension.

“Social Security 2024 Increase Angers Some Americans”

Friends, wherever you stand on this issue, no matter if you are outraged or ambivalent, no matter whether it hurts you or does not affect you, social security benefits will approach in value....zero.

It wont go to zero. It wont come close to providing a “living” either. It wont do anything but bitterly dissapoint those who depend on it.

The ebd of the era of “big government” is indeed looming. Its demise will be sealed by money printing. The only way America can go forward is an outright default on the promises everybody thought they could count on.

We could have avoided much of the pain this situation will cause, but we chose as a country to let our representatives steal the “American Dream”.

Bicker as you will over this issue, but the focus should be “how do states and localities deal with legions of Americans who are destitute because they counted on a government check to sustain them?”

All promises by local, state, and federal governments are likely to not be kept.

What then?

I’m not angered by it. Last year’s increase was higher, but I’m not going to pooh-pooh anything extra that I get. I was expecting Biden’s Regime to not pay anything.

Does anyone, anywhere honestly believe that the cost of living rose only 3.2% last year. All other arguments aside, that sort of manipulation of reality only further decreases the government’s credibility, even as difficult as that may be.
