SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Amid hundreds of lawsuits accusing clergy of sexual abuse, the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento announced on Saturday it intends to file for bankruptcy.
Bishop Jaime Soto said he believes it is the most transparent, fair and respectful way to address all the claims.

They’re trying to avoid being forced to sell off their real estate holdings to pay off lawsuits. And they have a lot of real estate.

The diocese is part and parcel of the Vatican that has wealth beyond tally. The lawyers should go after the whole Roman Catholic church that is now invading America from the South.
Pretending one pocket is penniless does not mean there are not other related pockets with lots of money to pay damages
An ironic yet excellent question. Alas, it should be enlarged to include all the grooming and other pedophilia activities going on in public education, as well as in other denominations and beyond.
My suggestion is to make ALL the charges individual and criminal, without any statute of limitations, leaving the civil side of law out of the picture. Every pedophile and every enabler of a pedophile should be charged in criminal proceedings, without question. If and as convicted, priest, minister, teacher or politician all should serve hard time as prescribed by law.

20 years ago, I was a scoutmaster and merit badge counselor for my sons Troop sponsored by our local catholic church. I would have never imagined that those two institutions would be where they are today.
Our boys will never be in the Gay Scouts. No way.
Earlier this year on a LSN post on this same topic I wrote “Disney, the Boy Scouts and the Catholic Church. All 3 were part of my childhood at one point, and I want nothing to do with them now.”
My son eagled out in 2011. His worse time in the scouts was when he forgot bring dry clothes on a rainy winter campout.
I’m guessing the Vatican already got its share first.
It's a rookie mistake to hold off on filing bankruptcy until you are broke. The trick is to file while you still have something to protect.
