Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked efforts by Senate Democrats to pass an assault weapons ban and universal background checks legislation after the United States over the weekend broke the record for most mass shootings in a single year.
Republican Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) objected to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) request for unanimous consent to pass the assault weapons ban, despite the pleas of Democratic senators who took to the Senate floor to cite the harrowing statistics of gun violence in America.
“The scourge of gun violence in America is a national crisis. The American people are sick and tired of enduring one mass shooting after another. They’re sick and tired of vigil and moments of silence for family, friends, classmates, coworkers,” Schumer argued on the Senate floor.
The assault weapons ban, originally sponsored by late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), would ban semiautomatic rifles with pistol grips, forward grips and folding or telescoping stocks, as well as rifles outfitted with grenade launchers, barrel shrouds or threaded barrels to allow for noise and flash suppressors to be attached.
But Barrasso argued that the Democratic-drafted bill would infringe on the Second Amendment and deprive law-abiding gun owners of an important liberty.
“Americans have a constitutional right to own a firearm. Every day, people across Wyoming responsibly use their Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms,” he said. “Democrats are demanding that the American people give up their liberty.”

In the House we've already lost one house member (Santos) and soon McCarthy by the end of the year; the Second Amendment hangs by a thread. Not much of a margin left.
Expect the Brandon Administration to attempt a ban by executive fiat.
Gee, I wonder why there’s so many murders....I’m sure it has nothing to do with open borders, releasing violent criminals and not prosecuting crimes. Nope-—definitely because of MAGA!!!

Removing Santos was breathtakingly stupid. Do the fools who did this actually believe anyone will think this proves the GOP believes in ethics as a result?

My best guess is someone with common sense told them to kill the bill or they would lose their cushy jobs.
I’m sure there are a number of RINO’s who voted against the bill only because they hope the issue goes away.
I agree. Hell’s bells even Fetterman said if they threw out Santos they should throw out Menendez.
They should have let voters decide; it’s only a few months from the primaries anyway.
But no. The Republicans had what, a four seat majority? They whittled it down to three and McCarthy is taking his ball and going home. Down to two.
This doesn’t bode well for 2A if Republicans keep throwing the fight.
What the American people are sick and tired of is the Democrats trying to take their guns. 😤

When have democrats ever cared about the American People? Unlimited power is all they care about.
Schumer tried an end run around the normal Senate rules by asking for a unanimous consent. It is normally used for votes to name a post office for some politician or proclaim some day as National Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Day or some such thing no one cares about. But you have to be vigilant because if no Republican is on the floor to object, serious matters can get passed, such as this. I don’t know if the rules require a member of the opposite party to be present for unanimous consent. Only one person has to oppose to kill a unanimous consent.

Criminals and governments prefer their victims unarmed. What reason would a government have for disarming the populace, except to do things to them for which the people would stage an armed rebellion? One of our two major political parties wants us defenseless. Why? What do they plan?
You mean suicide spree. Taking "recreational" drugs is a CHOICE. Everyone over twelve years old knows that drug abuse carries a risk of death. Fentanyl is ridding the population of many undesirables.
This power grab was a solution in search of a problem.
How many of the “mass shootings” (four or more victims) involved a semiautomatic rifle? How many of these “mass shooting” were committed by someone who could legally purchase or possess a gun?
Until these pantywaists can answer these questions, they are free to go curl up in a corner and suck their thumb.
