A US prison inmate has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing Derek Chauvin, the ex-police officer convicted in the death of George Floyd.
Prosecutors said ex-gang member John Turscak used an improvised blade to knife Chauvin 22 times on 24 November at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona.
Chauvin survived the attack and was said to be in a stable condition.
He is serving multiple sentences for Floyd's death, which triggered nationwide protests and rioting.
Turscak, a former member of a Mexican Mafia gang, allegedly targeted Chauvin in the prison's law library at lunchtime. He later said that he had been considering killing Chauvin for about a month because of his status as a high-profile inmate.
He told correctional officers he would have killed Chauvin had they not reacted quickly, but later denied to FBI agents he had wanted to take the former officer's life, according to court papers.
Turscak, 52, told FBI agents he attacked Chauvin on Black Friday - as the day after US Thanksgiving is known - as a symbolic connection to Black Lives Matter and the Black Hand symbol linked with the Mexican Mafia, according to prosecutors.

I thought the Mexican and Black prison gangs were enemies.
I figured he might’ve been stabbed once. But, 22 times...
He should be in a secure location. They knew other prisoners would try to kill him.
Whether one can be in protective custody would depend on whether there is someplace to put him. He may have decided against it, we don’t know on that.
However, you are thinking as a normal person. Normal people don’t go into stabbing frenzies to ensure death. The inmate in question obviously wanted to kill him and tried to ensure that would happen before he was stopped. Somebody in a frenzy can do 3 or 4 stabs every second and it takes time to cross a room to stop somebody because the guards can’t be everywhere all the time.
From an article dated 2011 about an Iraqi gang in the US :
...police said the criminal organization of individuals of Iraqi descent had suspected ties to the Chaldean Organized Crime Syndicate... The group has historical ties to Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel and the Mexican Mafia, a Mexican-American prison gang, the police said.
The six-month long investigation led to seizures of marijuana, methamphetamine, ecstasy, heroin, and prescription drugs including Vicodin, Oxycontin, Codeine, Xanex and Percocet, El Cajon police said in a statement.
Additional seizures include over $630,000 in cash, three luxury cars and 34 firearms including machine guns and semi-automatic assault rifles, as well as four improvised explosive devices, or IEDs....
It happened when he was in the law library, so he seems to have been in general population and not protective custody.

Imagine that.
And I am not sure how we would know he isn't still working for them.
FBI visits and relocates, 3 months to go before his release, slavic in a mexican drug gang, an FBI informant, does the deed for BLM on black friday (a shopping day) not a black holiday)
Nothing to see here..................
Weird thing about the Stabber.....he’s CROATIAN, WHITE and an FBI INFORMANT! And the FBI swooped into the prison after this stabbing.........makes one go , hmmmmmmmmmm.
Bttt
Chauvin is NEVER going to be UN-CONVICTED BECAUSE of fear of RIOTS from FERAL ANIMALS WILLING TO DESTROY EVERYTHING!
And a WHITE CROATIAN to boot!!
Excellent point.
No way he's an "ex". He's got his fellow gang members in prison too......
One would think. More to this story.
It is inhumane cruel and unusual punishment to allow this to happen. Since the federal system of prisons can’t insure safety for this inmate, he should be released immediately!
I’m guessing the fact that the autopsy shows that Chauvin did nothing wrong and Floyd ODd doesn’t matter
The stabber was TOLD BY THE FBI TO STAB HIM. And he isn’t Mexican or even Latino!
This reminds me of what happened to Karl Radek, a Bolshevik leader who wound up in the Gulag as the victim of a Stalinist purge. In 1939, he died in a fight with other inmates. But it was later disclosed that the NKVD orchestrated his murder by his fellow inmates.
