I saw an article today about the recent outrageous increases in homeowner’s insurance premiums, and of course they were blaming greater losses due to “extreme weather” caused by “climate change.” There is no increase in “extreme weather”; in fact, many weather phenomena like tornadoes and hurricanes have been at relatively low levels for years. What HAS changed is more and more development occurring in vulnerable areas, especially along the coasts, and over-inflated real estate values and rebuilding costs.

While the inflated property values are part of a larger problem, there is one solution to the issue of everyone suffering because of completely predictable and cyclical losses on the coasts: Make owners of coastal property members of their own separate risk pool, and stop lumping them into the same pool with those who own inland property that is not exposed to the same risks. If you want to live on the beach somewhere like Florida, then YOU and others like you should shoulder the entire burden of that risk. Everyone else should be in a separate pool and enjoy the benefit of lower premiums.

And I should have said the same about people who want to live in the middle of mountain forests. Just as with coastal property owners, they should shoulder the full burden of higher premiums because of choosing to live in a risky location, and should not be able to spread their own risk onto those who choose to live in less fire-prone areas.

Shatner has been an eco-loon from the early 80’s at least-he’s always had some other liberal leanings, too-I remember him making some anti-Vietnam war remarks when I was in my teens. He has been an actor most of his life, living in Cali-so.....

My least concern is dying of climate change. I’m able and willing to adapt to whatever God does with the climate.
