Caroline Glick: Aharon Haliva (IDF Intel Chief) has got to go. Now.

An intelligence chief who publicly rejects the government’s characterization of a war, whose poor professional judgment led to catastrophe and who has a history of contemptuous insubordination simply cannot be trusted. Op-ed.

Immediately after the blackest day in Israeli history, a consensus formed that we must wait until after the war to investigate how Hamas was able to invade the country, slaughter 1,200 innocents and get away with 240 hostages. There’s a lot to recommend this position.

We’re at war. Now is not the time for action, not recrimination and trials for failed generals, security chiefs and politicians. Good or bad, you go to war with the army and leaders you have. People have jobs to do, and our job is to let them do theirs.

While reasonable on its face, there is a problem with delaying a reckoning. At least in some cases, it seems clear that the people whose failures enabled the Hamas attack are not capable of bringing us victory.

Case in point: Israel Defense Forces Intelligence Directorate Chief Chief Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva. In the weeks since Oct. 7, more and more information has come out about why Hamas was able to pull it off. All of the information points to Haliva and his close subordinates.

The Field Observers unit at Nahal Oz base suffered the greatest losses there during Hamas’s assault. The unit, comprising female soldiers, is responsible for monitoring the footage from security cameras along the Gaza border around the clock and alerting forces on the ground and in the intelligence community to anything suspicious.

Haliva was given his position by the left-wing government in 2021. The Mossad and much of leadership of IDF was focuses on getting rid of Netanyahu for months. The Right warned of terrorists, so the Left downplayed the threat.

Israel didn’t ignore the threat in 1973. They understood that any spoiling attack on the Egyptians would prevent US aid.

Haliva was left out of the emergency war meeting that happened as soon as news broke. Everyone at the top level understood immediately his culpability, and Haliva himself understands he’s done.

Here’s a relevant excerpt from the article:

…All of this would be bad enough. But it becomes even worse when seen in the framework of the 10-month insurgency the Israeli left waged against the Netanyahu government.

That insurgency was led by Haliva’s family. His ex-wife and the mother of his children, Shira Margalit, is married to Ilan Shiloah, a senior advertising executive. Margalit and Shiloah stood behind much of the political unrest that Israel has experienced since last year. Haliva’s daughter spoke at anti-government protests. His son’s twitter feed is filled with anti-Netanyahu invective...

Failure of IDF Intelligence regarding Oct. 7th Hamas attack on Israel was not Bibi Netanyahu’s fault; his subordinate left wing intelligence Chief was insubordinate, along with other liberals in IDF and Mossad, and did not notify Bibi about known Hamas activity in preparation for the incursion and violent attack through the southern border of Israel.

Block has long been a good journalist. She is one to listen to. Only time will tell if she was wrong.

This attack mirrored the deceptive Egyptian actions before they attacked across the Suez Canal in Oct. 1973, also on or near a Jewish holiday if I remember correctly.

US intelligence seems to have failed at the same time.

Aaron Haliva is the director of Military Intelligence. Directly responsible in the first place. Ronen Bar is head of Shin Bet (Shabak) civilian intelligence. No doubt he is culpable as well, but not as obviously as Haliva.

I don’t believe Americans understand how God-hating and amoral a lot of these senior people are.
