Washington Post and BBC falsely claim the Dublin attacker was not an immigrant – here is the truth

On 25th November (local time), The Washington Post published a report claiming that the perpetrator of a stabbing attack in Ireland that led to riots in Dublin was not an immigrant but an Irish citizen.

The report cited BBC’s unnamed sources that claimed that the perpetrator was an Irish citizen who lived in the country for 20 years.

As per the BBC’s report, the claims of him being a foreign national were “false” as the man lived in Ireland for 20 years and had Irish citizenship.

However, the Washington Post published only the half-truth. In reality, the man was originally from Algeria and had been living in Ireland for the past two decades. He became an Irish citizen more than a decade ago. The attacker was reportedly living in Dublin City Council hostel accommodate before he attacked children with a knife on Parnell Square on 23rd November at noon.

Youth hostels usually expect their guests to move on and have limits to how long you can stay there. I don’t know if they make special exceptions, but my guess is the guy was homeless.

FWIW, there are different levels of deception. If they say the guy is an Irish citizen and imply that he’s not an immigrant, that’s different from saying he’s a citizen an outright denying that he’s an immigrant — or is it?

Public transport was disrupted, vehicles were set ablaze, shops were looted and clashes with police were reported. Gardai blamed the “far-right” faction for the violence. I just watched a YouTube where some group that told the truth about the attacker was called out by an Irish journalist for stating the truth. Her argument was that since it was a volatile situation, telling the truth was dangerous and unhelpful and the correct response was to say nothing of the attacker’s background. During the back and forth, it was claimed that he had not worked a day in the 20 years he lived in Ireland.

The message was and is that importing the third world into Ireland is the right thing to do and any objections by the native Irish is racist, islamophobic, right-wing and should be punished by the force of the new laws proposed by the government.
