Sen. Mitt Romney and Sen. Joe Manchin’s bill to stabilize the national debt, which has more than doubled in the last decade, has been gaining bipartisan support in Congress.
The Fiscal Stability Act aims to strengthen and stabilize the country’s fiscal health by establishing a commission to find solutions to decrease the national debt that currently exceeds $33.6 trillion.
The legislation would require Congress to take an up or down vote on the proposed solutions, adding an extra layer of accountability.
“Establishing our bipartisan fiscal commission will help balance our budgets, keep government spending lean and responsible, and protect and strengthen the Medicare and Social Security benefits hard-working Arizonans have earned with every paycheck,” said Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., a co-sponsor of the bill.
Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., another co-sponsor, said he also supports creating the commission, which, he added, is the best way to create real reform amid a highly polarized political climate.
The bill has at least six other co-sponsors, including Republican Sens. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina; and Democratic Sens. John Hickenlooper of Colorado, Mark Warner of Virginia and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire.

And we all know who the commission members will be: a group of "bipartisan" former congressmen, senators, and executive officials (is Alan Simpson or Tom Kean Sr. available?) who will recommend gimmicks and tax increases.
And of course it mandates an up or down vote on the recommendations.
Here's an idea! Instead, how about the CURRENT legislators (congressmen and senators, who we pay to do these things), form a COMMITTEE to "tackle" the national debt.
Oh, no! We can't do that! That takes serious thought and effort, and we don't have the time - we only work 12-2 two days a week and have reelection fundraisers to attend.
So we'll just delegate to a bunch of people who AREN'T accountable - pass the buck and pretend we did something.
Oh, and it only took him five years to come up with this old idea.
Mittens brings nothing to the table in order to get nothing done. Sounds right.
For fighting waste and fraud nothing works more than expensive establishment types sitting around jawboning over nothing that will be implemented. Just another scam.
Tax increases for whites no doubt will be their solution.
Borrow money to pay off the debt.
ponzi 101.
The US has trillions in untapped oil and gas and mineral resources. IER estimated the worth of the government’s oil and gas technically recoverable resources to the economy to be $128 trillion in 2013.
Hahahaha. Thanks for posting this. I forgot about this little megalomaniac who tricked enough stupid conservatives into believing his snake oil and we got Slick Willie and his famous dog, Hillary.
The Federal Government now spends more money on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, interest on the National Debt, and defense than it collects in taxes. So without cuts to those categories, even if the government totally eliminated all other spending, the budget still wouldn’t balance.
These massive deficits in spending every year, by every president of late, has kept the system barely functioning. The only ‘growth’ we get now has been massive deficits and debt, and Republican and Democrat voters show no interest in stopping that spending.
A commission designed to spend more money. Hey Mitt how about signing legislation that has cut in current spending with additional reductions each year after that. With those reductions going to pay off principal on the outstanding loans that have accumulated.
It’s all very simple. SPEND LzESS MONEY
Todd Young is one of a handful of Republican senators who has voted for every monster spending bill over the last 4 years. This is his attempt at a fig leaf.
Reminds me of the Paperwork Reduction Act.
Just created more paperwork and federal employees.
Doesn’t the bill specifically exclude Social Security from the list of programs that can be considered for cuts?
A commission that does nothing but two martini lunches.
Spoken buy someone who truly gets reality.
Mitt we KNOW what the problem is ... politicians spending too much money and giving away entitlements like candy to children.
No commission needed.
Stop spending money you don’t have (on commissions you don’t need). Spend less than you do. Use left over to pay down debt.
Let me save you some time, Mittens.
JUST STOP SPENDING!
