Iran’s supreme leader told the head of Hamas in a face-to-face meeting in Tehran that his country would not enter the war with Israel and accused the terror group of not giving any prior warning of the Oct 7 attacks.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told Ismail Haniyeh that Iran – a longtime backer of Hamas – would continue to lend the group its political and moral support, but would not intervene directly, according to three Iranian and Hamas officials with knowledge of the discussions who asked to remain anonymous.
The supreme leader pressed Haniyeh to silence those voices in the Palestinian group publicly calling for Iran and its powerful Lebanese ally Hezbollah to join the battle against Israel in full force, a Hamas official told Reuters.
Hezbollah, too, was taken by surprise by Hamas’s devastating assault last month that killed 1,200 Israelis. Its fighters were not even on alert in villages near the border that were frontlines in its 2006 war with Israel, and had to be rapidly called up, three sources close to the Lebanese group said.
“We woke up to a war,” said a Hezbollah commander.
The unfolding crisis marks the first time that the so-called ‘axis of resistance’ – a military alliance built by Iran over four decades to oppose Israeli and American power in the Middle East – has mobilised on multiple fronts at the same time.
Hezbollah has engaged in the heaviest clashes with Israel for almost 20 years. Iran-backed militias have targeted US forces in Iraq and Syria. Yemen’s Houthis have launched missiles and drones at Israel.

Iran provided the weapons and the training. But if they were behind the attacks on 10/7, the Mossad would have found out about it ahead of time. Apparently, Hamas went dark. They didn’t use any electronic methods of communications so there was no way for Israel to track them.

This is a head fake. Like heck Hamas “didn’t tell them” about their war plans Those war plans were drawn up by Iran and Hamas together in Iran. And the main purpose of their attacking Israel was to stop any further rapprochement between Israel and Saudi Arabia and to put the kabbash on further Arab countries joining the Abraham Accords with Israel. And at least momentarily it has worked.
Not in the long run though, I think. Iran is Shi’a and the rest of the countries are Sunni. And they don’t like each other. The real problem here that needs to be addressed is getting Biden out of office, as it was his regime’s perceived weakness that facilitated the initiation of war in both Ukraine/Russia and Israel/Hamas.
Next comes Taiwan, and now that Xi has lulled old Joe into a false sense as to what China’s intentions truly are as to Taiwan by his visit today to San Fran, he will be seriously contemplating whether to attack Taiwan in the very near future.
Biden is in office through 2024, one more year. Xi must act fast if he wants to invade Taiwan, as Trump will be back in office and Xi will have lost his chance to start his own war. When Putin and Xi met right after Biden took office, I highly suspect the conversation went something like this; you go first Putin, Iran you go next, and then China will go last. Overwhelm Biden with wars. This next and hopefully last year of Biden’t regime should be very interesting.
Iran lies about not fighting Israel.They are using proxies in the region to fight Israel and providing them the weapons. Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, can take a flying leap into a steamy pile of pig manure.
I have heard that Gaza-Hamas jumped the gun and blew the entire operation Iran had been preparing for decades.
The announcement cost 10B. So they made their announcement now they will go ahead and do exactly what they were going to do before the bribe.
