Methane from landfills is another climate emergency. Here’s how to fix it.

This year is shaping up to be the hottest on record. And while carbon dioxide dominates the climate conversation, another powerful pollutant, methane, requires our urgent attention. In fact, reducing methane emissions is the single most efficient way to limit warming in our lifetimes.

This means that as we curb methane emissions from the oil and gas sector, we can not forget to swiftly tackle methane emissions from landfills. At the end of the month, when world leaders meet at the COP28 climate conference, the United States can set an example by putting stronger landfill controls on the agenda to slash methane, advance our climate goals and promote healthier, safer communities.

It doesn’t persist like CO2 does.

co2 doesn’t last long either, plants eat it................

How about finding a way to capture that methane and then sell it as natural gas? That way, it is burned, producing carbon dioxide (less potent) and water vapor (still the most prominent greenhouse gas).

Many landfills today are indeed fitted with a network of "biogas" wells, punched down through the layers of decomposing garbage. I've seen one location where the gas is piped to a nearby generating station where it powers a turbine. The generating station provides around half of the electricity needed by a waste water treatment plant in the same area.

Yeah, this latest "climate emergency" is nothing of the sort. Again.

More actual science. You stop it too!

Funny how none of these ‘scientists’ will print that the optimum CO2 level for plants is 800- 1200 ppm.

We’re barely at 400 ppm.

Why can’t people grasp the obvious?

There is NOTHING puny humans can do to affect climate change NOTHING!

The forces at work on earth AND the solar system are so IMMENCE that puny humans can do NOTHING about them.

The SUN for instance (radiation). The moon for another (tides etc.) Ocean currents, intricate. Volcanoes, undersea as well as above land, erupt at will with NOTHING man can do to prevent them.

The atmosphere, oceans in the sky, with complex currents and effects. (Weather).

Humans have ZERO control over these because these are things for GOD to control as He wills them.

Mans efforts in these regards are futile and illogical.

Why should we suffer/do without when ABSOLUTELY NOTHING humans can do would change ANYTHING.

I worked at a landfill that harvested its methane through a network of pipes and processed it through big engines turning the methane to electricity. They sold the electricity to a local city that provided it to their residents at rates better than the state’s biggest power company. There’s big money in that business. The technology works.

I believe the landfill in Northern New Jersey near the Medowlands has methane capture operations.

WHEN DISPOSABLE DIAPERS ARE BANNED & MOTHERS ARE LEFT TO WASHING OUT & RE-USING CLOTH DIAPERS, I WILL PAY ATTENTION TO THINGS ABOUT LANDFILLS..

THE LARGEST VOLUME OF ONE ITEM IS DISPOSABLE DIAPERS———

OTHERWISE-—THIS IS ALL SMOKE & MIRRORS.

Since when did the “United States setting an example” mean diddly? Any such conversation without the mention of China and India is pure pap.

I'm sure the Chinese, Indians, Indonesians, and all Africans will get right on this.

I think I see the problem here --> "COP28"

TWENTY-EIGHT of these ridiculous conferences that are able to find bogeymen everywhere and every one of them they find sucks up billions and billions of dollars. And tens of thousands of people jetting off to luxe places, eating the finest food and paying top dollar for the world's best hookers.

Now, there IS a landfill methane problem and it's not climate change. When you build a music venue on top of the capped dump, you've got a problem waiting to explode. The Shoreline Music Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA was built on closed dump. The methane bubbled up into the sod. When a concert goer tossed a lighted match, it lit the methane. There were numerous fires on the grass until they retrofitted a methane collection system.

In 1987, when the amphitheater was still new, Doobie Brothers frontman Tom Johnston stepped to the mic for a little in-between-songs chatter. “We've played about 20 gigs so far,” he said of their 1987 tour. “We’ve had a gas and the audience has had a gas and we hope you will, too.”

When the crowd began laughing, Johnston seemed confused. He was, apparently, the only person in Shoreline who hadn’t heard about the methane fires.

“”WHEN DISPOSABLE DIAPERS ARE BANNED & MOTHERS ARE LEFT TO WASHING OUT & RE-USING CLOTH DIAPERS””

That is how we grew up. With 7 kids and our parents, we all pitched in with the babies. Just seemed normal to us. Also, it was a 2 bedroom, one bathroom house. Our parents filled up the bedrooms with 3 boys and 4 girls, so they slept on the foldout couch/bed in the living room. With 1 bathroom, we developed very strong bladders. Comes in very handy on long road trips and baseball games.

Recently the local trash company has allowed yard waste in the trash to encourage “biological decay” in the landfill as opposed to before where you had to pay a ridiculous amount for separate bags. I think they must be tapping into the methane now.

Waste Management (WM) is capturing the methane and running their garbage trucks etc on it. Apparently dodging the motor fuel taxes makes it especially good for the bottom line.

Why not have the government get out of the way?
