Biden Administration Picks Maryland for New FBI Headquarters

The Biden administration has chosen a location for a new FBI headquarters in Maryland, the General Services Administration confirmed Wednesday, as the suburban Washington location was selected over nearby Virginia following a sharp competition between the two states.

The site is planned for Greenbelt, about 13 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of Washington.

"GSA looks forward to building the FBI a state-of-the-art headquarters campus in Greenbelt to advance their critical mission for years to come," Robin Carnahan, the GSA administrator, said. "Thank you to everyone at GSA, DOJ, FBI, Congress, and others who helped reach this important milestone after a comprehensive, multi-year effort."

The GSA also noted that Greenbelt was determined to be the best site because it came at the lowest cost to taxpayers, provided the greatest transportation access to FBI employees and visitors, and gave the government the most certainty on a project delivery schedule.

Consideration for a new headquarters has been going on for more than a decade, and in recent months the FBI has expressed concern about the site selection process.

Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland said the location in his state was ideal because of access to mass transit and because the cost to taxpayers would be significantly less there.

"We're very happy about this location. We've got a lot more work to do," Cardin said. The choice was first reported by The Washington Post.

In a joint statement, Maryland's elected leaders applauded the decision and said their push to bring the FBI headquarters there was "never about politics" and the new facility would meet a "dire, longstanding need for a new consolidated headquarters."

Democrat Maryland Gov. Wes Moore argued in recent months that building it there would be fast, save taxpayers $1 billion and meet equity goals raised by President Joe Biden, with a...

Greenbelt is grossly over-crowded as is. Traffic has been
a nightmare there for twenty years. The BW Parkway becomes
a parking lot during rush hours.
Terrible decision.
But at least the FBI will be just down the BW Parkway
from their NSA pals at Fort Meade.

I think the FBI would feel much more at home in Berlin circa 1940, or Moscow circa 1950.

“...The suburban Maryland site near the USDA property in Beltsville...”

My old stomping grounds. Spent a lot of time in the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center taking pictures. I hope they don’t infringe on that.

It’s a good decision, politically. Maryland has a likable black governor, and Prince George’s County has a competent black, female supervisor. The location is next to a Metro station, and both politicians say a huge retail and housing complex will be built there. It’s got direct road access to DC and eastern exurbs and is close to the MGM Casino.

Being a worker there will suck because of the crime there, illiterate worker pool, bad housing choices, and distance to the FBI training site at Quantico.

Ten years ago, I would have wanted them to move here to northern Virginia, but now I think it’s a good place to put them

I retired from a company that built facilities like this one. It will be a fiasco. As a headquarters the architectural team will want to make a “statement” of their cutting edge creativity and that will make it a huge mess to a great degree. The GSA and agency won’t have the sense to rein them in. As the ‘gee-whiz” factors work into the design they will consume all the budget but be largely non-achievable.

I expect nothing from the swamp.

I am voting for trump and want him to utterly destroy everything in his power. Unfortunately the deep state is more powerful.

They don’t want feedback. They don’t want any information from a stupid citizen.
The two times we had to use them they were completely useless and refused to even listen to our input.
You can gift wrap a criminal situation for them and they are not only not interested but they are hostile to the stupid ignorant useless taxpayer who brings them the situation.

A guy in charge of roof maintenance for a major corporation once told me — the bigger the architect, the worse the roof leaks.

My favorite architect (true) story.

The architect was the one who placed the order for the bricks for a ten story building facade. They were to be delivered in two shipments.

When the first shipment showed up he realized that he had accidentally chosen the wrong color.

He did a quick redesign and had the brick facade with two different brick colors.

It actually looked pretty good when it was done.

The FBI building should be built in a wheat field in Kansas. I'm not sure if Kansans would appreciate having a nest of rodents nearby, but they should be nowhere near DC. I'd like to see all agencies spread throughout the country. I think having government drones live near normal people would be good for them.

Keep the Feds in blue Maryland. The lesser of two evils.

I think they should renovate J. Edgar Hoover building. At least we would be able to see it in D.C.

But since they're not doing that, build it in Maryland is the right thing to do.

So it'll be done by 2035.

Larger than the Pentagon?

I posted the other day all the things that can be found in the existing headquarters, the J. Edgar Hoover building in DC. It's already like a city -- or at least a goodly size town. See more here.

50 years ago the Pentagon was a symbol on the left for everything that was wrong with the country. This new building sounds like it will be a symbol of all that's wrong with our new police state.

Empty shopping malls all over the country. I’d save the farm land and put it in one of those.
