Ukraine fired 15 cruise missiles at a Russian shipyard in occupied Crimea, hitting a warship in an attack that could further undermine Moscow’s offensive capabilities.
French-supplied SCALP missiles struck the Russian vessel stationed at the Zalyv dockyard in the port city of Kerch on Saturday, Lt Gen Mykola Oleshchuk, the commander of Ukraine’s air force said.
The warship was armed with Kalibr cruise missiles that have frequently been used by Russia to strike targets inside Ukraine, he added.
“I confirm,” Gen Oleshchuk said on Sunday morning after posting a message the evening before which said the Ukrainian attack had probably hit its target.
Ukrainian media named the Russian warship as the Askold, a small Karakurt-class warship that is armed with eight Kalibr missiles. The Askold was reportedly going through its final fittings at the harbour before being commissioned into the Black Sea Fleet.

“What IS confirmed is that Ukraine expended about $20 million worth of cruise missiles (15 of them) to take out this little Corvette.”
How much did that little Corvette cost?

It’s abject ignorance to think of war in any other terms.
It has always been so, and it will always be.
UKRAINE stated the shot 15 cruise missiles.
“UKRAINE stated the shot 15 cruise missiles.”
No, the reporter asserted that number, and later cited the Russian Ministry of Defense for the claim that they shot down 13 out of 15. The Ukrainian source cited merely confirmed that an attack took place, probably hit its target, and alluded that SCALP missiles may have been used.
Russia has a history of exaggerated claims of destroying Western-provided weapons, even claiming to have destroyed some before they were even delivered to Ukraine, or claiming to have destroyed more than the total number provided.
“Still right over your head”
Still just in your head.
Except for the Russian ship being taken out. That really happened.
Keep whistling past the new paradigm for naval forces.
I totally agree with everything you have said in your post, MalPearce.
However, the above statement seems to suggest that you might believe that those arguing that we should pull all of our support the second the Ukrainians make the slightest battlefield gains, or otherwise celebrate the most-minor of military victories, are being sincere / arguing in good faith.
They ain't.
Rather, they say that merely to annoy us.
Not even the most lukewarm supporter of Ukraine in its fight for survival would genuinely think for a minute that, e.g. the destruction of a Russian landing craft or the annihilation of a single Russian brigade warrants summarily stopping all aid.
Regards,
If I were involved in a legal suit with Bill Gates, and if he were really intent upon winning - even by using "unfair" means, such as forcing me to spend more money for my defense than I can afford - would it be intelligent of Gates to spend a mere $5 million (chump change for him) to force me to spend $50,000 (a fortune for me)?
The countries belonging to NATO have a combined GNP many, many multiples of Russia's.
If we could dump $1 trillion in ordnance on Russia's military assets, and succeed in destroying a mere $500 billion worth of their assets, we would bankrupt them - with ourselves barely breaking a sweat in the process.
This is how you attrite your enemies, win wars, and safeguard the peace.
Regards,
We'll keep whistling past the Legendary Graveyard of the Russian Navy - formerly known as the Black Sea.

The fate of Ukraine will not be decided in Moscow, Rome, London or the USA—it will be made by the People of Ukraine. Once they sicken of war they will replace Mr. Z. and put in new people to make a deal with Russia. In a way its like the Spanish Civil War that was used to test weapons for WW II. What have we learned. Tanks are useless, drones rule the skies. Warships are just targets, floating coffins.
You’d be paying more to maintain it in the stockpile (it costs more than people think) and it also costs to “destroy” it in the US too.
Just any ideology will do to excuse RuSSia’s raping and conquest of a(nother) neighbor.
You speak as if NATO will remain engaged, and commit whatever it takes to defeat Russia in Ukraine.
Yet you know that will not happen.
I think there really are people who reckon that support should be pulled from Ukraine because it’s had a win here and there. And they really should go and learn some military history.
If the UK and USA had taken that attitude in World War 2, then Hitler would’ve won. If we’d said to Russia, “you’re doing fine without our help”, then maybe Stalin would’ve fought the Nazis to a stalemate but the Jews in eastern Europe would’ve been completely wiped out.
But the biggest thing of all, the thing that really shows up the nonsense thinking, is the idea that actually we could negotiate a peace deal with Russia and expect Putin and his Mafia lot to honor it.
America pretty much saved Russia’s ass in World War 2. What did Stalin do in return? Started the Cold War which menaced the world long after his death.
Nobody in their right mind would ever do a deal with Medvedev/Putin because they’re revanchists who’ve broken every pledge Russia made at the end of the Cold War. For longer than they’ve been trying to break Ukraine, they’ve been fighting a cyber war against Europe and the USA. For longer than they’ve been attacking Ukraine, they’ve been blackmailing Europe by turning the oil and gas supplies on and off.
The leader Putin reminds me of more than any other is Enver Hoxha, who revered Stalin, thought Khrushchev was a “revisionist, an anti-Marxist and a defeatist”, fancied himself to be a bit of a genius, and totally bankrupted his country building 173,371 one-man concrete bunkers because he feared invasion from every direction including from the USA and Russia. He was a bit obsessed with “Illyrianism” just like Putin’s got his ethnonationalist obsession.
In short, Hoxha was a paranoid rashist nut and Putin’s no better.
Warmest regards in the upcoming heating season, Baerbock-boy. Happy Nasskalt!
Agreed, there are such fools - but those aren't the ones here on FR, mocking and taunting us when they say, "Yeah, Ukraine sank a landing craft, so can we finally turn off all the aid now?" Rather, that is pure sarcasm.

True! All of their nattering is predicated upon the ridiculous assumption that Putin would suddenly prove to be a man of his word. Whereas, in fact, the only way to ensure a lasting peace and equitable reparations for the war damages in Ukraine is to present Russia with an undeniable defeat (probably coupled with Putin being deposed).
America pretty much saved Russia’s ass in World War 2. What did Stalin do in return? Started the Cold War which menaced the world long after his death.
Indeed! But the Soviet Union was like a man who has suffered truly catastrophic injuries, and who - without medical attention - would have lost all four of his limbs, but who - with medical attention - has been able to retain at least his left arm, from just above the elbow. Such a man isn't going to be gifting the surgical staff a fruit basket in gratitude!
My Soviet-born wife explains to me that the 300,000+ war dead Russia has recorded thus far due to Putin's adventurism won't have made anywhere near the same emotional impression on the Russian populace as the approx. 1 million casualties that America (with roughly three times the population) would have to suffer in order to experience a comparable loss.
For one thing, the killed and injured men are disproportionately from remote rural areas with predominantly non-Russian ethnicities. If the sons of elite Moscow or St. Petersburg residents were dying in proportionate numbers, the outrage would be greater. Secondly, in the backwaters of the Russian Federation, a zinc coffin and $3,000 in cash are viewed as equitable compensations for the loss of a son.
Regards,
Hypersonic missiles carrying nuclear warheads would take out the entire fleet in the area. A few more towards the homeland and America is decapitated. WE NEED TO PULL BACK AND LET RUSSIA v Ukraine happen as if it is none of our business. It doesn’t. The same goes for Israel v Hamas. We do not need our ships in harms way, nor our men.
“WE NEED TO PULL BACK AND LET RUSSIA”
…whatever.
You advocate abandoning deterrence, and abandoning the rest of the world to being violently conquered, apparently hoping that we won’t be eaten until later.
Well that is not how nuclear war with the United States works.
If Russia tries to use nuclear weapons against the USA, Russian society will be effectively destroyed. Few of the residents of Moscow or St.Petersburg would be likely to survive the first day. Neighboring countries would carve up the charred remains after the fallout cooled off a few weeks later.
The analysts looking at the video of the strike (Rob Lee and others) are now saying that it appears to have been four cruise missiles, with three hits (which could mean the first Russian interception of a Storm Shadow/SCALP).
