JD VANCE says he would not support authorizing military action in Iran

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said Sunday he would not support military action against Iran on its own soil right now as threats continue to increase on U.S. troops in the Middle East.

CBS’s Margaret Brennan asked Vance on “Face the Nation” if he would authorize the use of force by President Biden against Iran as attacks on U.S. troops are rising in the Middle East.

“Right now, absolutely not,” Vance said. “I think that we should be trying to deescalate the situation. Of course, we need to have red lines, though. If the Iranians attack American troops, if they play —”

“They have, multiple times,” Brennan interjected.

“If they play an escalatory role in the conflict, we need to be willing to respond,” Vance continued. “They have attacked, certain militia groups have attacked and I think we’ve done the right thing, a proportionate response. If they hit us, we have to hit them back but if you’re talking about an attack on the Iranian mainland, I think that would be a significant escalation right now, it would be a mistake.”

Biden ordered U.S. military forces on Friday to carry out “self-defense airstrikes” on a weapons storage facility and an ammunition storage area used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated groups in eastern Syria.

There have been at least 19 attacks against U.S. and coalition forces in the Middle East over the past two weeks, including four times in Syria and 12 times in Iraq. There were also three new attacks on Thursday.

“Iran who was protecting Osama bin Laden”

Wrong. Bin Laden was being protected by the Pakistan military, not Iran. His body was dumped in the ocean so there could be no martyr’s grave set up for him, for his followers to make pilgrimages to.

A wildly disproportionate nuclear strike on Iran would almost certainly elicit a Russian nuclear response. Moreover, it is questionable (in reality would be impossible) for US forces to engage in a successful ground campaign in Iran- a near peer adversary of the sort the US hasn’t faced since WW2/ Korea. Our military hasn’t been this weak since the 1930’s- USA/ NATO combat tactics and technologies have been disappointing in the conflict in Ukraine- while Iranian ballistic and drone technologies have exceeded all expectations (this has been very surprising TBH). If Israel feels it necessary to attack their arch enemy Iran let them, but we should not get involved- even our involvement in Gaza has been excessive and will cause decades of further ill will after Trump and (I hate to admit it due to his awful domestic influence) Kushner brought the region towards peace. Unfortunately, the Biden regime has had the most wildly aggressive foreign policy in living memory, while our military is at its weakest point.

I wouldn't call them that. The objective would be is to destroy their military capabilities. We can do that in 24 hours. We will destroy their air defense systems so we'll achieve air superiority. Then we can destroy all of the infrastructure that is needed to support their military.

The last time US air forces fought against an adversary with any type of air defense was in Vietnam- and didn’t fare too well- certainly sustained casualties that would be politically impossible in the present environment- Iran is a much more hardened foe than the North Vietnamese were. We should evaluate both our capabilities and those of our adversaries much more dispassionately. Iran is, of course, a bad actor, but it doesn’t really threaten the USA except in the context of our unapproved bases in Iraq and Syria which no voters or legislature has ever voted to extend indefinitely. Iran may be an existential threat to Israel- in which case they should handle it internally- we could sell them necessary weapons of course- good for our MIC if taxpayers don’t finance- but other than that, I just don’t see a compelling reason to sustain combat casualties that will at a minimum be in the thousands. Destroying Iranian combat capability in 24 hours may have been possible in the 1980’s but is a fever dream in the present day.

At the root of present Middle East problems lies Iran. At the root of the Iran problem lies Jimmy Carter.

"The fact they're even asking Vance this speaks volumes to me."

The fact that he answered a ridiculous hypothetical speaks not volumes but the entire set.

Here was the appropriate response:

"Martha, any scenario that puts US boots on the ground in Iran would require an Act of War passage by Congress. We are not anywhere near that measure of involvement and it is unwise for you and I to even speculate on a question solely designed to create clickbait."

You’re certain about this... how? From Senator Inhofe’s “it’s him.....” statement having seen the “evidence” Obama provided by DOD.

Of course Pakistan protected the occupant in Abbotabad, paid by whomever.

The body of the deceased was dumped in the ocean, US govt. stated, because no country would take the remains (even though Saudi’s supposedly Ok’d the ocean funeral- they still would not take the remains, probably due the extensive remaining bin Laden family contracted to the House of Saud.

Post 9-11 it was Bush who began the protection payments to Iran. Obama came along later to expand these payments with a bogus “settlement” of a Hague lawsuit which no nation would have honored and the US had never done before. A major point.

There is no way osama could have survived to Abbotabad with his diabetes. No evidence of dialysis being done has been release along with no physical evidence constituting “proof of death” has been offered to the public, neither to journalists nor to independent third parties.
