Kremlin says Israeli bombing of Gaza violates ‘international humanitarian law’

Russia’s foreign minister said that Israel’s retaliation against Hamas terrorists in Gaza is against international law, and will lead to a crisis that will last decades.

Sergei Lavrov made his comments — the Kremlin’s most critical of Israel so far — in an interview with Belarus’s state news agency Belta reported Saturday.

“While we condemn terrorism, we categorically disagree that you can respond to terrorism by violating the norms of international humanitarian law, including indiscriminately using force against targets where civilians are known to be present, including hostages that have been taken,” Lavrov told the news agency.

“If Gaza is destroyed and two million inhabitants are expelled, as some politicians in Israel and abroad propose, this will create a catastrophe for many decades, if not centuries,” he added.

“It is necessary to stop, and to announce humanitarian programs to save the population under blockade.”

It isn’t bombing; it is vermin control.

"Early version of VietMinh/Vietcong.......one of multiple reasons I really hate the guy."

Understandable. I was born and raised in NY State, and in my 40's and 50's, did extensive Civil War research. I weighed both sides, and can sympathize with both sides. What has really angered me is the move to wipe out all history of the Confederacy's military. The left wants to destroy and denigrate the history of one group, in order to promote another's. Liberals are just as evil as Hitler.

Lavrov’s an idiot. He has it exactly backwards; by using civilians and hostages as shields, the terrorists have placed themselves outside international humanitarian law and have forfeited their right to any protection under those laws.

4th Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, Part 3, Article 1, Section 28:

"The presence of a protected person (aka civilian noncombatant) may not be used to render certain points or areas immune from military operations."

Well just to play devils advocate here, Adolf was a somewhat useful tool against USSR. Ask any Ukrainian.

Well as one of our gys used to say in Nam, best weapon for guerilla warfare is a knife, second-best is a rifle. Airstrikes always mean a risk of civilian casualties.
Just because a family is living in hamas-tied area doesnt necessarily mean each and every member of said family is hamas sympathizer let alone a member of hamas infrastructure.

War always means a risk of civilian casualties.

Primary difference between Hamas and Israel? Hamas directly targeted Israeli civilians, and also hide behind civilians.

Israel obviously does neither.

Problem is, you cannot attack and then go run behind civilians, or start attacking from civilian areas, you know, like launching rockets from children's schools and playgrounds, launching rockets from next to hospitals, etc.

When the crafters of the Geneva Conventions discussed these things, they made damned sure that the tactics Hamas uses cannot stop those who are fighting them. You cannot simply attack and then go run into a city of a million civilians and then cry wolf that you're being attacked and thousands of civilians are dying due to those attacks.

No, the world doesn't work like that. To subscribe to that nonsense is a non starter, and never will be something that is “logical”.

Doesn't matter if they're complicit or a sympathizer. If the enemy uses them as shields, that's a shame, but it does not mean that you simply walk away and give up, or sit around and wait for your enemy to come out into the open. Doesn't work like that no matter what your argument is.

Innocents die all the time and it sucks, but you know as well as I do that Israel will do whatever they can to reduce civilian deaths, but all civilian deaths are due to one thing, and one thing only, and that is the action that Hamas took on 10/07/2023.

Russian hypocrisy is boundless.

Back during the Cold War, I thought it was because they were communist ... now it’s clear that it’s because they’re Russian.

Adolf was a moron who thought he could conquer Russia and take possession of the oil fields there. He invaded, got his ass kicked, and ushered in Germany's long-time dependence on Russian oil for its energy supplies. In the end, Hitler actually helped Russia.

True that.
Well its all in the name, aint it? Nationalistisch-Socialistische Deutsche Arbeiterd Partei, even Kremlin used to view them as colleagues back in the 30s/early 40s.
Just saying, without them the invasion of USSR to mainland Europe would have probably happened sooner and been little worse than it had been. Could be wrong of course.

Quite possibly. The main thing is that this country has fought way too many proxy wars with Russia and China over the years with nothing to show for it, except dead Americans and politicians, and their big donors getting rich. Ukraine is Europe's problem. We did our bit to save Europe's ass twice. It's time that crap came to an end. I don't even like the fact that we've got military in Israel. That's how Vietnam started...that, and the CIA assassinating the President of Vietnam. I just read that the CIA wants a cease fire in the Middle East. Who are they going to assassinate in the Israeli government if they don't get it?
