Israeli official clarifies Florida’s role in weapons shipment after DeSantis’ claims

Israel’s consul general in Miami on Thursday clarified Gov. Ron DeSantis’ role in facilitating a claimed transfer of weapons and ammunition to Israel,

DeSantis’ office and presidential campaign said earlier in the day that he had helped ship weapons and drones to Israel at the consulate’s request,

When pressed for more details, Redfern declined to disclose the private parties or specify what the federal hurdles had been. Redfern later clarified that the state did not purchase the weapons and ammunition, and that those items “were transported separately” to Israel...

The secrecy surrounding how the weapons were acquired and shipped comes as the DeSantis administration has also been slow to provide information about how much the state has spent to rescue hundreds of U.S. citizens from Israel to the United States and which vendors were involved in the rescue operations.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management on Thursday – nearly two weeks after the first rescue flight arrived in Florida — said that the rescue flights are expected to cost Florida taxpayers approximately $32 million.

Multiple news services had reported desantis earlier said that he had sent 'drones, body armor, helmets, weapons and ammunition't to Israel.... now it turns out an important part of that statement were lies, debunked by the Israel consulate.

And the cost for desantis using the state of Florida's taxpayer money to generate p.r. for himself?

So far, Florida had said they had flown 700 people back from Israel, and sent 2 cargo planes of supplies there...

For $32 million.....

desanctimonious probably is thinking, "well, as long as it isn't his money....anything goes to help his campaign."

Who, specifically, said this? Offices don't speak. Name the person(s).

This issue requires further clarification from Desantis. And DOD.
What did Meatball send to Israel and who paid for it?

“Multiple news services had reported..”

Unless there are direct statements either written or oral from the governor or his office I will assume those news services performed their usual style of hack journalism.

I know several people who have taken the normal flights either to or from Israel in the last few weeks. Unlikely ‘rescue’ flights were needed. Impoverished Floridians stranded in Israel could have gotten help covering regular airfare.

It sure does. Individual states have no business doing things like this. I would even argue that that states should not be sending humanitarian aid. That’s the purview of the federal government and private charities.

If anyone should disagree, how about California sending all sorts of aid to Gaza?

No, it was stuff sent to reinforce the local civilian population. Israel has actually had trouble supplying its civilians with guns and equipment because their government went on a flaky “all we are saying, is give peace a chance” John Lennon moment.

Exactly. These are weapons for the civilian population.

Give it another couple of weeks, and we will see stories emerging from the DeSantis campaign claiming that he had sent a battalion of soldiers from the Florida National Guard to liberate Jews from the Nazi death camps.

I don’t particularly like Desantis but trashing him here on FR is wrong. He’s done a lot more than most of us have sitting here by our computer screens.

A number of Freepers have already made the comparison between Scott Walker and Ron DeSantis, but it’s crystal clear that we have another successful governor who is in over his head as a presidential candidate.

You all could have looked up other articles that say who said stuff was sent, but to support desanctimonious, you have to imply the news is false.... but it turns out desantis and his office is the one that has been lying for p.r.

Jeremy Redfern, a spokesperson for DeSantis’s office, said that Florida contracted cargo planes to transport drones, body armor, helmets and healthcare supplies to Israel.
Redfern also said that the state worked with private parties to “help get weapons and ammunition” to Israel at a separate request of the consul general.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday he’s arranged to send drones, weapons and ammunition to Israel as it prepares for an incursion of Gaza in response to Hamas’ attack.

Because desantis has been thin on details, his inital states seemed to indicate it was for the Israeli government.

Now that the Israeli consulate has denied they asked for weapons and ammunition, and there is no explaination from desantis or the state, about what is going on....

desantis supporters try to save face by saing it’s for Israel civilians...

without prooff...

And since the biden admin spokeman has said the have know knowledge of the shipments,

how did desantis get the necessary export permission and licence for all the materials?

Well, ladyjane, do you have access to millions in cash that you can toss away to pay for a plane?

Do you have an airplane that can make that flight? One that you can donate to the cause?

DeSantis is using taxpayer money to stroke checks to a non-profit that has been in Israel since the beginning.

DeSantis isn’t flying the planes...which I’m surprised his fans on here haven’t already said he was doing.

Flown back or just out of Israel?

Previous FR threads stated those evacuated from Israel were dropped off in Cyprus.

$32,000,000 for two planes.

Really have to wonder where that money is going? It could all be legitimate.

However, a very deep dive needs to be undertaken on the “non-profit” that DeSantis has latched onto and is coordinating all of the flights, etc.

Non-profits sure do seem really profitable for the folks that run and work for them. Especially the ones that have been formed by and are run by liberals and have an amazing knack for securing taxpayer funding for all sorts of things. And it’s really interesting when said, non-profits, used a very, very sizable chunk of any money taken in to pay for salaries, bonuses, travel and expenses.

Just talk to the folks at the Clinton Global Initiative.

As for the guns and other equipment, there could be a legit explanation, maybe.

States have warehouses filled with old military equipment that they either purchased for their National Guard and Reserve elements. Plus the stuff that has been given to them by the Penatgon.

Some of these armories still have Vietnam era M16s.

There are programs like, DRMO, where municipalities can request old military gear for their police and sheriff’s departments. One of the reasons you’ll see departments driving around MRAPs, which could quite possibly be one of the worst vehicles ever produced for deploying any type of SWAT or emergency response team.

But, maybe he authorized to send some of that stuff over without knowing all the rules regarding who can get it and who can’t. Maybe.

Either way, he’s grasping at straws to try and save his campaign. No two ways around that.
