Coons: ‘So Much More to Do’ on Gun Laws — Not Protecting Our Own People

Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) said Thursday on CNNs “This Morning” that the United States needed to do “so much more” on gun laws because “we are not protecting our own people.”

When asked about the mass shooting in Maine, Coons said, “President Biden signed into law year the biggest progress we’ve made forward on closing loopholes in the gun background checks system and investing tens of billions of dollars more into community mental health.”

He continued, “We have a country divided in terms of our understanding on the limits of gun rights. It was one of President Biden’s big accomplishments along with a bipartisan group here in the Senate last year that we move forward on closing background check loopholes and improving gun safety but there is so much more to do.”

From what I’ve read, this shooting occurred in a bowling alley. One customer there with a concealed pistol and minimal training could have stopped the shooter cold.

So of course Democrats want to make sure that this defensive action couldn’t happen.

And I don’t think that’s because Democrats are evil. It’s because they are naive, and have a childlike unwillingness to think things through. They are just like the prohibitionists from the 1920s who wanted to ban alcohol. That ban failed completely. Anyone who wanted alcohol could still get it.

As a side note, it really is not helpful to call Democrats evil, although some certainly are. Most are just stubbornly naive. You can reason with them to an extent. I’ve had some success comparing gun control to Prohibition. Alcohol prohibition failed. How can you expect gun prohibition to be any different?

He had the gun illegally- he was cited for domestic violence and as a felony conviction could not own one from what I understand.

The moral to the story is that gun laws did NOTHING to stop him from getting a gun illegally, and throwing more gun laws on the books will do NOTHING to hinder felons hellbent on murdering people

Exactly, possibly including this one. A number of the articles have said he was committed to a mental hospital. If he was committed rather than entering voluntarily the probability is he couldn’t possess firearms. But as you noted, criminals don’t obey the law.
