No clue what they hoped to accomplish by slaughtering the most innocent

It is important to understand that Hamas sent 2,000 "Suicide Soldiers" into Israel.
Israel killed at least 1,000 of them, and some reports say 1,500.
I have seen no estimates of Hamas POWs, which might mean there are none, except for those who were gravely wounded.
They were behaving with the moral abandonment of Suicide Bombers.
It is a mistake to look for “reasons” psychos do things. Who knows?
They just like killing. Any excuse will do.
